South Orange, N.J. -- Powered by a four-run fourth, the Creighton Baseball team delivered a 6-1 victory over Seton Hall on Friday, May 14.
The win lifted Creighton to 20-9 on the season and 12-2 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall fell to 21-18 overall and 14-6 in conference play. The Bluejays also clinched a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament courtesy of the victory.
The Bluejays took an early lead in the second by manufacturing a run. Freshman Alan Roden was hit by a pitch to open the second, he went to second on a sac bunt from senior Ryan Mantle. After a walk, junior David Webel stroked an RBI single through the left side to make it 1-0.
With two down in the fourth, Webel played a key role once more. After swinging at the first pitch, Webel worked a five-pitch walk. The next two hitters, juniors David Vilches and Will Hanafan, drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Senior Parker Upton made the most of the free passes by beating out an infield single to the right side of the infield. With two out the Bluejay base runners were off on contact, allowing Webel and Vilches to score. As the Pirate players protested the safe call at first, Hanafan alertly darted for the plate to make it 4-0. Upton was awarded three RBI for the bases clearing infield single. Before the frame ended sophomore Andrew Meggs laced an RBI single to left, giving Creighton a 5-0 edge.
The game remained 5-0 into the final frame as Meggs delivered another RBI single and Seton Hall pushed across a run in the bottom half of the frame.
Bluejay starter Dylan Tebrake sparkled with eight innings of shutout ball, limiting the Pirates to five hits. Tebrake recorded six strikeouts, walking just one Pirate to move to 8-0 on the season. Pirate starter Ryan McLinskey took the loss (4-1), allowing five runs on four hits and four walks in 3.2 innings.
Upton and Meggs led Creighton's offense as the duo combined to go 4-for-9 (.444) with five RBI. Each Bluejay posted a pair of hits in the victory.
