South Orange, N.J. -- The Creighton Baseball squad suffered a pair of losses to Seton Hall on Saturday, May 15. The Bluejays dropped the opening game 15-0, then fell 5-3 in the second game.
Following Saturday's action the Bluejays are 20-11 on the season and 12-4 in BIG EAST action, while Seton Hall moved to 23-18 overall and 16-6 in conference play.
Game 1: Seton Hall 15, Creighton 0 (7 innings)
A scoreless game broke down for Creighton in the fourth inning as the Pirates plated eight runs on seven hits and a pair of critical errors.
Senior Jonah Smith took his first loss in BIG EAST action, falling to 6-3 on the season. Smith was tagged for eight runs, five earned, on eight hits in 3.1 innings.
Creighton's lone hit came in the fifth from senior Ryan Mantle.
Game 2: Seton Hall 5, Creighton 3
The second battle was significantly closer, with the Bluejays taking the lead in both the second and third frames. Creighton claimed a 1-0 edge in the second, getting a walk to sophomore Sterling Hayes, a single by senior Dax Roper and a pair of productive outs. Junior David Vilches connected on an RBI ground out to bring Hayes home.
Seton Hall responded with a run of its own in the second, capitalizing on a Bluejay error to knot the game at 1-1.
The third inning saw freshman Alan Roden stroke Creighton's only extra base hit of the day. Roden blasted a two-run double to right-center, plating sophomore Andrew Meggs and Mantle (both of whom reached on one-out singles).
The Pirates, however, answered with two runs themselves in the bottom of the third. A pair of walks from Bluejay starter Cade Lommel proved costly as a bunt and two-run single from Tyler Shedler-McAvoy to tie the game once more at 3-3.
Seton Hall used four consecutive singles with two down in the sixth to claim a 5-3 edge, which proved to be the final tally.
Bluejay senior John Sakowski took the loss (1-2), allowing two runs on five hits in three innings. Seton Hall's Nick Payero earned the win (4-1) with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Roper closed the game with two hits (2-for-4).
The Bluejays and Pirates will play the series finale on Sunday, May 16 at 10:30 am (CT).
