Scouting the Musketeers (2021: 23-22, 13-9 BIG EAST)
Xavier typically plays one of the toughest schedules in the BIG EAST and 2021 was no exception. The Musketeers went 4-4 against Xavier and Seton Hall, but dropped a series to Villanova as well as a game to Georgetown.
The Musketeers are hitting .250 as a team, led by Ryan Alternberger (.377) and Andrew Walker (.320). Two more regulars are hanging out near the .300 mark as shortstop Jack Housinger is at .297 and Natale Monastra at .295.
Walker and Housinger are both speedsters on the base paths, with 14 and 11 stolen bases respectively.
On the mound the Musketeers have a team ERA of 5.02, but the starting quartet of Nick Zwack (2.78), Trevor Olson (3.18), Ethan Bosacker (3.86) and Lane Flamm (4.82) provide a strong base.
Scouting the Bluejays (2021: 21-11, 13-4 BIG EAST)
Since opening the season 4-7, Creighton has won 17 of 21 games.
The series at Seton Hall, however, was the first time since BIG EAST play began that the Bluejays seemed to have an off day. Creighton was swept in the doubleheader on Saturday, May 15. During those two games the Bluejays committed seven errors and were out scored 20-3.
Fortunately the series finale brought back the Bluejay team that has been on display since late March. More importantly
the Bluejays found another arm as freshman Hudson Leach was strong in four shutout innings.
Creighton's strength this season has been aces Dylan Tebrake and Jonah Smith. The duo are a combined 14-3 with 3.40 ERA over 116.1 innings. The pair have 125 strikeouts and just 36 walks.
At the plate the Bluejays are hitting .273 as a team, led by five regulars over .298. Pacing Creighton are freshman Alan Roden (.364), sophomore Andrew Meggs (.344), senior Ryan Mantle (.317), senior Parker Upton (.312) and freshman Nolan Clifford (.298).
What's at Stake This Weekend
Creighton and Xavier have both already clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, but seeding remains up for grabs.
The Bluejays can win the regular season with a sweep. Creighton could finish with the No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3 seed with any other result.
Xavier, meanwhile, can move to as high as the No. 2 seed.
BIG EAST Scheduling Quirk
As the standings sit for the final weekend, Creighton and Xavier could play five consecutive times. The same would be true for Seton Hall and Connecticut, the other two teams that have clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Connecticut and Seton Hall meet in Storrs, Connecticut for a four-game series this weekend. Currently the Bluejays lead the BIG EAST conference, while Seton Hall is second. Connecticut is third, while Xavier sits in fourth.
Everyone has Bad Days
Entering the series at Seton Hall (May 14-16) Creighton led the NCAA in Fielding Percentage at a record setting pace of .988. As the series begin the Bluejays had committed just 12 errors.
After a late inning error in the series opening win, the Bluejays were still just at 13 errors in 28 games. The doubleheader on May 15, however, changed that. Creighton committed four miscues in the opening game and three more in the second game, for seven on the day.
Despite the bad day on May 15, Creighton remains seventh in the NCAA in fielding percentage at .982 on the season.
