Mason, Ohio -- Despite an 11 strikeout complete game performance from starter Jonah Smith, the Creighton Baseball squad dropped a 2-0 decision to Connecticut in the winner's bracket of the BIG EAST Tournament on Saturday, May 29.
Due to the rain altering the schedule on Friday, the Bluejays have a quick turnaround. Creighton will face Xavier in an elimination game at 3:04 pm (CT).
Locked in a pitcher's duel with Connecticut's Ben Casparius, Smith was flawless in the opening three frames with five strikeouts. Still scoreless in the top of the fourth, Connecticut leadoff man and BIG EAST Player of the Year Kyler Fedko blasted a solo home run to right. Following a single, Smith sat down two more Huskies in the frame to keep it a 1-0 contest.
Connecticut added to its advantage with another run in the fifth, getting a one-out double from Chris Brown, a single by Zach Bushling and a sacrifice fly by Fedko to make it 2-0.
The Bluejay offense had its chances, putting runners on base in five of the first six innings. Creighton's best opportunity came in the sixth as freshman Alan Roden and senior Ryan Mantle connected on one-out singles. Casparius, however, induced a pop out and a strikeout to close the frame.
Casparius went on to claim with win (8-4), notching 13 strikeouts in seven innings, while relievers Justin Willis (0.2) and Caleb Wurster (1.1) were flawless over the final two innings.
Smith dazzled in the loss (6-5), allowing two runs on eight hits in eight innings of work.
Offensively two of Creighton's three hits came from Roden.
