Creighton Men's Cross Country, Men's Golf and Women's Golf recognized
NEW YORK – The BIG EAST Conference has announced the 22 teams that have been recognized with 2020-21 Team Academic Excellence Awards for having the highest collective grade-point averages in each conference sport. Creighton had three teams honored, as its men's cross country, men's golf and women's golf programs were recognized.
Chris Gannon's men's cross country program attained a league-best 3.695 GPA. This year marks the fourth honor (and second straight) for CU's men's cross country program, as it was previously recognized in 2019-20, 2015-16 and 2014-15. The Bluejays had five men finish with a perfect 4.00 GPA in the spring and 12-of-14 runners had a 3.50 GPA or better.
Judd Cornell's men's golf team earned a 3.758 GPA, which was good enough to win a fourth straight BIG EAST accolade in the classroom. CU's four consecutive BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Awards are tied for the longest active streak among men's programs leaguewide with Georgetown men's swimming and diving. The Bluejays had three men finish with a perfect 4.00 GPA in the spring and 9-of-11 golfers had a 3.50 GPA or better.
Creighton women's golf collected a 3.842 team GPA to land BIG EAST recognition for the second consecutive season. Debbie Conry's squad has now won the award five times in eight seasons as a league member, having also won it in 2019-20, 2015-16, 2014-15 and 2013-14. All nine women's golfers landed on the Dean's List in the spring semester.
The winners were chosen based on the 2020-21 grade-point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution's roster as of the last contest of the championship segment in each conference-sponsored sport.
Nine schools had at least one team honored, with Georgetown leading the way with eight. Villanova had the second most with five teams recognized. Creighton had three teams recognized, followed by Seton Hall with two. Butler, Connecticut, DePaul and St. John's each had a team earn Academic Excellence accolades.
Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the BIG EAST Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships were not held this season. Additionally, Georgetown did not compete in certain Olympic sport seasons. It was important to the BIG EAST Academic Awards Committee to continue to acknowledge the academic accomplishments of these student-athletes.
