The Bluejays earned two doubles championship and one singles
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's tennis team secured two doubles titles and one singles title at the Drake Invitational as the Bluejays concluded play in Des Moines, Iowa on Sunday.
Kate Krueger and Malvika Shukla earned the Flight 1 Doubles championship with an 8-4 win over Ines Absisan and Madison Gallegos (Omaha), while Siri Kongara and Emma Gener captured the Flight 3 Doubles crown with a close 8-6 victory against Drake's Mille Haagensen and Darinka Stepan.
Freshmen Siri Kongara and Valerie Negin each went 3-0 during the first three rounds of Flight 3 singles action heading into Sunday. The two newcomers dueled on Sunday with Negin coming out on top, 6-0, 6-0.
Sarah Wilcox and Negin fell in the Flight 2 Doubles championship to a pair from North Dakota, 8-4, while Krueger and Wilcox each won consolation singles matches.
"This was a very good start to the fall season," head coach Tom Lilly said. "All the teams in the tournament were fairly even and it was excellent competition for us. I'm excited to see how this team will be going forward and just how far we can go. There is potential to do things we haven't done before, but it won't come without a lot of hard work."
The Bluejays continue their fall schedule with the Bluejay Invite on Sept. 24 and 25 at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha.
