DES MOINES, Iowa -- Creighton men's tennis sophomores Shin Inoue and Zack Maline each won singles championship titles on Sunday during the final day of the Drake Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa.
Inoue needed three sets to win the Flight F crown. The Japan native won the first set 6-4, fell in a tiebreaker during the second and outlasted Drake's Gabriel Sardo 10-4 in a 10-point tiebreaker to decide the title.
Maline defeated his opponent in straight sets to take Flight H. The California native earned a 6-4, 6-4 win against Elijah Zifferblatt (Marquette).
Matthew Lanahan claimed third place in Flight D with a 6-4, 6-2 win on Sunday morning, while the Bluejays dropped four other matches.
Stratton Brown (Flight B) and Ethan Neil (Flight G) each finished second in their respective draws after falling during championship contests. Both Casey Ross (Flight A) and Jose Oscar Diaz (Flight C) lost consolation matches.
"As we expected, we had some tough matches today and finished 3-4," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Congrats to Zack and Shin on their titles. Like all teams, we have some individual and team aspects to clean up and hope to make more improvements this week in time for our home invite."
Creighton returns to the courts on Friday for the start of the Bluejay Invitational at the Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha.
