Diego Gutierrez converted the game-winning goal during the 17th minute
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's soccer team posted a 1-0 shutout against crosstown rival UNO in front of 3,084 fans on Wednesday night at Morrison Stadium.
Omaha native Diego Gutierrez scored the lone goal of the match during the 17th minute.
The Bluejays improved to 2-4-1 overall and snapped a two-match losing streak, while the Mavericks moved their season record also to 2-4-1.
Gutierrez, who played three seasons with the Mavericks before transferring to Creighton prior to the 2020 season, outlasted the UNO defense with an individual effort for the game-winner. The senior received a pass from just inside the Bluejays' attacking side of midfield before dribbling past one defender, regaining possession as a center back attempted to deflect the ball away inside the box and chipping the ball over the Maverick goalkeeper into the back of the net. The goal marked Gutierrez's third of the season.
Senior co-captain Paul Kruse made four saves to preserve the clean sheet on Wednesday. With just under 20 minutes remaining, Kruse made impressive back-to-back saves after a free kick from about 25 yards away. The Heilbronn, Germany native made a diving save to his left on the initial shot before collecting a kick save on the rebound attempt.Â
Both teams limited each other from many attacking opportunities and the sides combined for just 17 shots -- Creighton 9, UNO 8.Â
Despite the low shot totals, Creighton went on the attack from the start of the match and had two corner kicks within the first two minutes of action. Daniel Espeleta fired off the first shot attempt during the third minute and had four within the first 15 minutes of play, including two on goal.
UNO attempted to find the equalizer before the break, but Kruse needed to make only one save during the final 25 minutes of the half to keep the Bluejays in front a 1-0.
Much like the Bluejays in the first half, the Mavericks attempted a corner kick and shot within the first two minutes after halftime before both offenses had trouble creating any scoring opportunities. UNO had a shot blocked in the 50th minute before going 20 minutes without recording a shot attempt.
Following the Gutierrez goal in the 16th minute of action, Creighton did not attempt another shot until the 64th minute. The Bluejays had four shots during the final 25 minutes of play but did not force any Maverick saves.
Wednesday was the second Creighton shutout of the season and first Bluejay clean sheet at Morrison Stadium since Oct. 23, 2019.Â
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Morrison Stadium against UIC.Â
