Women's Soccer Battles North Dakota State on Thursday

Omaha, Neb. -- The Bluejay Women's Soccer defense returns to the pitch on Thursday, September 9th in the midst of a scoreless streak better than 293 minutes. Creighton's opponent on Thursday comes to Morrison Stadium with just two goals on the season.

Creighton and North Dakota State have met six times previously, with the Bluejays holding an 3-2-1 edge. The last time the two squads met was in 2010, a 2-2 draw at Morrison Stadium (September 7). The Bluejays are 3-0-1 against North Dakota  State in Omaha.

Scouting North Dakota State (0-4-1)
The Bison come to Omaha looking for their second result of the season, but their first victory. North Dakota State earned a 1-1 at Wyoming on Sept. 2.
Offense has been the primary issue for the Bison as NDSU has scored just two goals in five matches. Both goals in 2021 have been unassisted, coming from Lavin Douglass and Olivia Watson. At Wyoming the Bison took a 1-0 lead on Watson's goal in the 72nd
minute. Wyoming, however, knotted the match in the 76th minute.
Defensively North Dakota State has allowed 13 goals, including a season-high four goals to Baylor (Aug. 22) and Pacific (Aug. 26). The Bison have split time in goal between Abby Wilkinson (269 minutes) and Sofia Howe (201 minutes). Howe has a 1.79 goals against average (GAA), while Wilkinson enters the match on Thursday with a 3.01 GAA.
Scouting Creighton (4-1-1)
Creighton has been adept at responding to challenges early in the 2021 season. Knotted in a 1-1 battle in the second overtime of the opening match this season, the Bluejays found the back of the net for the game winner in the 110th minute. After dropping a 1-0 match at Tulsa (Aug. 26), the Bluejays shut out Oral Roberts 3-0 (Aug. 29). Then after a 0-0 tie with South Dakota (Sept. 2), the Bluejays delivered a dominant 3-0 win over South Dakota State (Sept. 5).
Defensively Keelan Terrell posted her fifth career shutout and third consecutive against South Dakota State. Terrell lowered her season GAA to just 0.31, with a streak of 293 minutes (293:20) of scoreless soccer. Â
On offense sophomore Abigail Santana and senior Ansley Atkinson are leading the way for the Bluejays. Santana has posted a pair of multi-goal efforts to lead Creighton with four goals, while Atkinson has six assists in as many matches.
Jordy Rothwell Earns Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
The efforts of the Creighton women's soccer defensive back line were rewarded on Monday, September 6th as team captain Jordy Rothwell collected the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week nod. Meanwhile sophomore teammate Abigail Santana earned a spot on the conference's weekly honor roll.
Creighton's captain guided the Bluejays to an impressive weekend, posting a pair of shutouts and allowing just five shots in two matches. Rothwell and the back line did not allow a shot to South Dakota in a 0-0 draw on Thursday and did not yield a shot to South Dakota State until the 44th minute on Sunday. In all Creighton held its neighbors to the north without a shot for the first 153:49 of action this week.
Santana delivered a pair of goals in the Bluejays' 3-0 win over South Dakota State on Sunday, giving her four on the season. She gave Creighton the lead in the 48th minute, then added some insurance with a goal in the 90th minute.
Terrell Enters Match with the Bison Riding Three Consecutive Shutouts
Junior goalkeeper Keelan Terrell enters Thursday's match with North Dakota State on a scoreless streak of better than 293 minutes (293:20). The last time a Bluejay goalkeeper posted at least three consecutive scoreless matches was Erin Scott (current assistant coach at Marquette) in 2015 from Sept. 13 to Sept. 20. Over five matches, Scott's scoreless streak extended over 316 minutes (316:20).
Bluejays Victory Over South Dakota State Ended Jackrabbits' Unbeaten Streak at 22 Matches
Creighton's 3-0 win over South Dakota State on Sept. 5 ended a streak of 22 consecutive matches without a loss for the Jackrabbits. South Dakota State's last loss came in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, a 1-0 loss at Oklahoma State on Nov. 15. During the 2020 season the Jackrabbits went 12-0-5, ending in a 0-0 tie with Omaha (April 15) that saw the Mavericks advance on penalty kicks (3-1). The 2021 season began with five consecutive victories before South Dakota State came to Omaha.
Atkinson Approaching Bluejays' Top-10 in Single-Season and Career Assists
Senior Ansley Atkinson has been dishing out assists at a record pace in the non-conference season. Through six matches she has six assists. The single-season Creighton mark is 12 by Kristine Willrett in 2005. Currently Atkinson needs two more assists to climb into the single-season top-10. Four Bluejays are currently tied for eighth with eight helpers in one season, the last coming from Lulu Quigley in 2001.
During her four seasons at Creighton, Atkinson has 15 assists, putting her two away from creating another five-way tie for eighth place. Currently four Bluejays are bundled with 17 career assists, the most recent being Lauren Cingoranelli (2010-13).
