Scouting Villanova (10-6, 4-3 BIG EAST)
The return of Maddy Siegrist makes Villanova a very different team than the one the Bluejays saw in Omaha.
In 10 games on the floor, Siegrist is averaging 23.5 ppg and 9.6 rpg. In addition her presence makes every Wildcat on the floor better by increasing spacing. Last season against Creighton, Siegrist delivered 34 points and 19 rebounds in a 73-68 Villanova victory.
While Siegrist is the focal point, Lior Garzon and Brianna Herlihy are both averaging double-digits as well. Garzon brings 13.4 ppg, while Herlihy is averaging 11.5 ppg and 8.8 rpg.
Defensively the Wildcats force better than 15 turnovers per game and limit the opposition to just over 40% from the field (41.8%).
Scouting Creighton (14-4, 9-1 BE)
The Bluejays are a very difficult scout because if you focus too much on one player, the rest explode. In addition Creighton has the ability to score in the paint with Emma Ronsiek, Morgan Maly or Carly Bachelor. If a defense clogs the interior, Lauren Jensen, Maly, Ronsiek and others average better than nine treys per game (9.4).
Over the last four games the Bluejay offense has funneled through Ronsiek. The forward has 96 points during that span, dropping a career-high 30 points in Creighton's 86-80 win over St. John's on Jan. 16.
In the 80-70 win at Georgetown the Bluejays overcame 19 turnovers behind 11 treys and 22 points from Jensen.
Defensively the Bluejays have been successful at gang rebounding and creating more pressure on the ball this season. The Bluejays are averaging 36.6 rebounds and 15.0 turnovers per contest.
Keys To the Game on Sunday, Jan. 23
Limiting Siegrist's Impact: Maddy Siegrist is too talented to take away, but Creighton must keep her from second chance points and the free throw line.
Forcing the Wildcats to Defend: The Bluejays are at their best when they move the basketball to force the opposition to defend multiple options.
Defending the Rest: A superstar can either beat you themselves or give freedom for teammates to shine unchecked. Focusing too much on Siegrist will allow the other Wildcats to get going, specifically early in the game.
Players to Watch for Creighton
Bench: One of the Bluejays' biggest assets is their depth. That depth will allow fresh defenders to combat Siegrist and force Villanova to defend multiple option on offense consistently.
Bluejays Dish Out Extra Helpers at Butler
In Creighton's 95-44 win over Butler on Jan. 19, the Bluejays dished out a season-high 30 assists. That total is the most since Creighton set a program record with 37 helpers on Jan. 21, 1994 in a win over Wichita State (101-71).
Over the last two games the Bluejays have handed out 58 assists in victories over the Bulldogs and St. John's. The 30 assists against Butler is tied for the fourth highest total in Creighton history.
Over Sharing Isn't a Problem, It's the Solution
Sometimes oversharing can be an issue, but for the Bluejays it is far from true. A total of 11 times during the 2021-22 season the Bluejays have handed out at least 20 assists in a game, including the last four contests, all victories. During the stretch the Bluejays have 110 combined assists, an average of 27.5 per game. One of the most impressive points of this statistic is it goes beyond Creighton's point guards. The tandem of Tatum Rembao and Molly Mogensen account for just 43 assists over four games (39.1%).
Stealing the Win
Another difference in the 2021-22 Bluejay squad is the ability to pick their opponents' pockets. In 18 games this season Creighton has delivered at least 10 steals seven times, going 7-0 in those contests. In the previous two seasons Creighton posted double-digit steals just seven times, going 5-2.
