SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Behind a goal in the 86th minute from junior Ariana Mondiri, the Creighton women's soccer team secured a 2-1 victory over Seton Hall on a cold and rainy Thursday night at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 8-2-5 on the season and 4-2-1 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall fell to 5-8-2 overall and 1-6-0 in league action. Creighton is now 4-0-1 in its last 5 league matches, its longest unbeaten run in conference play since 2011 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Bluejays also improved to 7-0-2 all-time against the Pirates.
Junior Hannah Luke provided the offensive punch for the Bluejays in the first half, blasting her third goal of the season into the back of the net in the 25th minute of play. Senior Aida Kardovic was credited with an assist after recovering a loose ball and flipping a pass through a pair of defenders to Luke, who blasted the shot into the top right corner of the goal from 30-yards out to give Creighton a 1-0 lead.
Feeling some pressure Seton Hall fought for an equalizer before the break firing a pair of shots at goal. Freshman netminder smothered one of the Pirates scoring opportunities, while senior Gabby Grimaldi was forced to make a heading save in the closing minutes of the opening period to keep Seton Hall off the scoreboard.
With an 9-4 edge in shots at the break, Creighton continued to pile on the pressure during the opening moments of the second half with another three shots at goal.
Seton Hall would pull even with the equalizing goal in the 70th minute of play. Skyler Matusz rocketed a shot past Hall from roughly 25-yards out for her first goal of the season, knotting things up at 1-1.
In the 86th minute of play, a failed header back to the Pirates goalkeeper allowed for Mondiri to race past the Seton Hall backline and slip the game-winning goal over the Seton Hall netminder and into the back of the net for her third goal of the season, giving Creighton the 2-1 win.
In the match, Creighton outshot Seton Hall 19-8 and held a slim 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 20 when they host DePaul at 6:30 p.m. inside Morrison Stadium.
