OMAHA, Neb. – An equalizing goal in the 83rd minute from Lara Kazandjian gave the Creighton Women's Soccer team a 1-1 draw with DePaul on Thursday night inside Morrison Stadium.
The draw moves the Bluejays to 8-2-6 overall and 4-2-2 in BIG EAST play, moving into a tie for third place in the BIG EAST standings. Meanwhile, DePaul moved to 3-11-1 on the year and 1-6-1 in league play.
A defensive battle in the opening 45 minutes saw the visiting Blue Demons take a 1-0 lead into the break. DePaul found the back of the net in the 38th minute as Beth Smyth headed in her second goal of the season off a corner kick from Grace Phillpotts.
The Bluejays responded quickly with a pair of shots in the closing minutes of the opening frame but were unable to push anything across as DePaul took a 1-0 advantage into the locker room.
Creighton came out of the break with a little more urgency on the offensive end of the pitch, while piling on the pressure on the defensive end.
Down to the final 20 minutes of play, the Bluejays continued to push for an equalizer. Juelle Love and Kazandjian each had scoring opportunities but were denied by DePaul netminder Mollie Eriksson.
With time running out and their backs to the wall, Kazandjian came up big once again for the Bluejays. Kazandjian evened the match up at 1-1 in the 83rd minute of play as she blasted a shot past Eriksson into the back of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the year. Abigail Santana earned the assist on the play, finding Kazandjian at the top of the 18-yard box for the equalizer.
Creighton out shot DePaul 15-4 in the match, holding the Blue Demons to one shot in the second period. Corner kicks were even at 4-4, while Eriksson collected four saves on the night.
The Bluejays return to action on Sunday, Oct. 23 when they travel to Cincinnati to battle Xavier.
