Bluejay Men's Soccer Delivers 4-2 Win Over Butler

Omaha, Neb. -- Faced with a must win situation, the Creighton Men's Soccer team delivered a 4-2 victory over Butler on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
The victory lifted the Bluejays to 5-3-5 on the season and 2-2-3 in BIG EAST action, while Butler fell to 8-5-1 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play.
The match got off to a rocky start for the Bluejays as Butler received a penalty kick in the 10th minute (9:08). Bulldog Joost de Schutter converted the chance to give Butler a 1-0 lead.
Creighton countered with a goal in the 37th minute (36:25) when sophomore Jackson Castro delivered a goal from 35-40 yards away. Castro stole a failed clear by Butler goalkeeper Gabriel Gjergji. Jake Ashford earned the assist as he sent a ball to Gjergji.
The contest remained tied at halftime, but the action heated up as play resumed.
Creighton took a 2-1 lead in the 58th minute (57:30) when sophomore Owen O'Malley collected his seventh goal of the season. Senior Charles Auguste and Castro each collected assists with one-touch passes to set O'Malley in position.
Butler responded in the 65th minute (64:55) Jack Streberger pushed across a goal from the left side of the penalty box after Palmer Ault drew the Bluejay defense to him.
Creighton reclaimed the advantage in the 79th minute as the BIG EAST leading scorer, junior Duncan McGuire, beat a Butler defender and Gjergji deep in the box for his tenth goal of the season.
The Bluejays added some insurance in the 88th minute on Auguste's second goal of the year.
Both squads finished with nine shots in the match, while Creighton earned seven corner kicks to claim that category 7-1.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 22 as the Bluejays face Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis. at 7:00 p.m.
