Women’s Tennis Opens Bulldog Classic Hidden Duals With Five Victories

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Creighton women's tennis team picked up five victories during the opening day of competition at the Bulldog Classic inside the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
The Bluejays tallied a 3-0 mark in doubles play over Omaha, while picking up two wins during singles play against Drake on Friday.
Sophomore Valerie Negin collected the Bluejays first win of the afternoon by taking down Drake's Elizabete Klavinska in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, while junior Malvika Shukla also secured a singles win. After dropping the opening set to Drake's Mille Haagensen, 6-3, Shukla battled back to claim the second frame, 6-2. Shukla then finished off her opponent with a 6-4 win in the decisive third set.
Ana Paula Martinez, Leanne Kendall, Annika Elvestrom and Allison Wilcox each dropped their first matches of the day as Drake captured victories at the No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles slots.
The Bluejays closed out the first day of competition by capturing victories in all three doubles matches against Omaha. Martinez and Kendall opened the doubles play with an 8-6 triumph over the Maverick's Ines Absisan and Jessica Aragon at the top slot.
Shukla and Elvestrom secured a 8-5 victor over Keegan VanPelt and Brooke Covington at the No. 2 doubles spot, while Negin and Wilcox made quick work of Alexia Di Giulio and Addison Miller at the No. 3 doubles position.
Creighton will continue play at the Bulldog Classic on Saturday morning.
