Creighton and Marquette both 6-0 in BIG EAST play
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- No. 21 Creighton Volleyball completed a weekend road sweep on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over host Providence.
Scores of Creighton's season-high sixth straight win were 25-14, 25-22, 25-12. The Bluejays improved to 14-3 overall and are 6-0 in BIG EAST play, while Providence fell to 9-10 and 1-5 in BIG EAST action after suffering its first home loss of the fall.
"I thought at points it was a tale of two teams. I thought we started slow, and then about one-third of the way through game one we really got our rhythm," said Creighton coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "I was really disappointed with the last half of game two and got on them in the locker room more than we usually do, but I did think in the third game we came out with a lot more energy and bettered the ball. Road weekends are hard. To get both matches are a great thing and we're excited to get back home and play Marquette and DePaul."
Creighton fell behind 10-6 in the opening points of the match before a timeout from Booth turned around the Bluejay fortunes. CU would score 19 of the next 23 points to cruise to a 25-14 win, including a 9-0 serving run from Keeley Davis that featured two of three aces she had in the set. Creighton hit .476 in the first set with 11 kills on 21 swings as five Bluejays had multiple kills. After pounding kills on each of its first six swings, PC had two kills and six attack errors in its final 19 attacks of the set.
Creighton never trailed in the second set, taking a 6-1 lead at the outset. The lead grew as large as 21-10 before CU had to hold off a furious Providence rally to win 25-22. Davis had five kills and another ace in the second set, while Kendra Wait dished 11 assists. The Bluejays posted 21 digs in the second set, including eight from libero Allison Whitten on her birthday.
The Bluejays had another strong start in the set, using back-to-back aces from Ellie Bolton to quickly take a 5-1 lead. Sis would serve a 10-0 run to end any threat of a reverse sweep from the host Friars. Three-time All-American Jaela Zimmerman made her second appearance of the season, serving up her first ace of the fall on match point before being mobbed by teammates. Wait had 15 assists and CU hit .364 in the frame
Sis led all players with 10 kills while Davis finished with seven kills, six digs and four aces on .500 hitting. Whitten owned a match-high 18 digs and Kiana Schmitt collected three blocks. CU had 43 kills, nine aces, 51 digs and five blocks on .290 hitting.
PC was led by eight kills each from Emma Nelson and Shaliyah Rhoden. The Friars had 25 kills, four aces, 38 digs and four blocks on .111 hitting.
Creighton returns home on Friday to host No. 18 Marquette (15-1, 6-0 BIG EAST) in a battle of two teams tied atop the BIG EAST standings. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
