Scouting Creighton (6-3-6, 3-2-4 BIG EAST)
Fifteen matches into the season the Bluejays remain one of the few teams to find the net in each contest. In six contests Creighton has scored once, going 0-2-4 in those matches. When the Bluejays have scored two or more goals Creighton is 6-1-2. Raise the output to three goals or more and Creighton is 6-0-0.
Junior Duncan McGuire leads the team and the BIG EAST with 26 points on 12 goals and two assists. Sophomore Jackson Castro is second for the Bluejays and in the BIG EAST with 21 points on eight goals and five assists, while sophomore Owen O'Malley has seven goals and five assists to give him 19 points..
Goalkeeper Paul Kruse has been solid throughout the season, posting his second shutout of the season to lower his GAA to 1.41 with 41 saves.
Scouting Providence (4-4-7, 2-2-5 BIG EAST)
The preseason favorite, Providence has struggled this season. The Friars are tied for the league lead with seven ties this season, including five in BIG EAST action. Providence's two victories came at DePaul (1-0 on Oct. 1) and at home over Butler (2-1 on Oct. 15). In spite of the struggles, Providence enters the final match of the season with as much control as a team can ask for. If the Friars defeat Creighton, Providence will clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament. Â
Providence's offense is led by a trio of players as Gevork Diarbain, Ramzi Qawasmy and Gil Santos all have three goals. Diarbain sits atop the scoring for the Friars with 10 points as he is also tied for the team lead with four assists.
Defensively Providence has been stingy this season, allowing just 17 goals in 15 matches. Five times the Friars have held opponents scoreless, including in its last match at #19 Xavier on Oct. 29.
Goalkeeper Lukas Burns has played the bulk of the season (990 minutes), but Rimi Olatunji has been in the net over the last four matches. Burns has a 1.27 GAA with 33 saves, while Olatunji has a 0.75 GAA with 10 saves. Olatunji has limited the opposition to three goals in four matches.
What's At Stake in the Final Match
With one match remaining in the regular season, the Bluejays and Friars both control their own destiny.
Creighton enters the match with Providence in fifth place. If the Bluejays defeat the Friars, Creighton will clinch a three or four seed and therefore host an opening round match in the BIG EAST Tournament.
A draw will also clinch a spot in the postseason for the Bluejays, although Creighton would earn a road match as either the five or six seed.
Should the Bluejays tie or fall at Providence, Creighton will need some help to remain in the postseason picture.
For Providence it is much simpler, win or the season ends on Wednesday. A Friar victory clinches a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, as either the four, five or six seed based on the outcome of other contests.
