Bluejays can earn outright title with win at #16 Marquette on Saturday
By: Rob Anderson
CHICAGO, Ill. -- The 11th-ranked Creighton Volleyball team clinched at least a share of its ninth straight BIG EAST regular-season title with a 3-0 win at DePaul on Friday, Nov. 18th.
Scores of Creighton's (25-3, 17-0 BIG EAST) 17th consecutive victory were 27-25, 25-14, 25-20. Picked third in the preseason BIG EAST poll, DePaul fell to 9-20 and is 5-12 in league action.
The Bluejays trailed 19-15 late in the first set before rallying on Ellie Bolton's serve to move ahead 20-19. Creighton went ahead 24-22 and appeared to take the first set a point later, only to have DePaul win a challenge to extend the set at 24-all. A short time later CU's 26-25 lead seemed to disappear when a DePaul attack was ruled in, only to have that call also be overturned as the Jays took the 27-25 opener. Norah Sis had seven kills, three digs and two blocks on .583 hitting in the opening set, helping CU overcome eight kills, four blocks and three digs by Jill Pressly.
"I thought DePaul played very well again," said Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "They're up and down, and I thought they did a lot of good things. It was a really tough match to get rhythm. There were lots of challenges."
Creighton shook off the pesky Blue Demons in the second set with a 5-1 run to move in front 17-11. Kiara Reinhardt had a hand in four of CU's five blocks in the second set as the Blue Demons were held to -.079 hitting with 12 attack errors in 38 swings. Pressly had eight of DePaul's nine kills in the second set.
The Bluejays started slow in the third set, falling behind 8-2, before a timeout led to a 7-0 service run by Allison Whitten that featured a pair of aces. With the score knotted at 14-all, the Jays went back to work to extend the lead to 20-16 and secured at least a share of the title on Sis' 12th kill of the evening. Four different Bluejays had two block assists in the clincher.
After missing last week with an injury, Sis returned to lead CU with 12 kills and nine digs, while four-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Ava Martin contributed 11 kills and five digs. Whitten had 13 digs and Reinhardt had her second match of the season against DePaul with nine blocks. Directing the Bluejay offense with 31 assists, eight digs and five blocks was Kendra Wait. CU hit .200 for the evening, collecting 40 kills, five aces, 45 digs and 12 blocks.
Pressly had 22 of DePaul's 36 kills on the night, adding 12 digs and five blocks on .275 hitting. Rachel Krasowski led all players with 22 digs. The Blue Demons finished with 36 kills, 56 digs, six blocks and no aces on .059 hitting.
Booth said in a post-match interview that while her team acknowledged the accomplishment, there is still more to be done. "Similar to the ones prior to them, it's just a fantastic group," noted Booth. "For this group to be undefeated at this point — and we know we have a really tough one in front of us tomorrow night — is really impressive. We've been pushed to the brink a couple times in league and found ways to battle and win. Even tonight, we had a game that was tight and had to figure out things. It definitely feels good, but our goal is to be the outright champion so we have a big opportunity in front of us tomorrow night."
Creighton can claim the outright BIG EAST title on Saturday night when it takes on No. 16 Marquette (24-2, 16-1 BIG EAST) at 6 p.m. in a match that will air on Flo Sports.
