Omaha, Neb. -- Powered by a 12-0 run to close the game, the 21st ranked Creighton women's basketball team downed DePaul 92-82 on Saturday, December 31.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 9-4 on the season and 3-2 in BIG EAST action, while DePaul fell to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in conference contests.
Trailing 72-65 entering the fourth quarter, Creighton got back in the game thanks in large part to a defensive switch called for by assistant coach Jordann Reese. Senior Rachael Saunders (Iowa City, Iowa) was moved to defend DePaul's Aneesah Morrow to open the final frame after the Blue Demon power forward had 17 points in the third quarter. The decision paid immediate dividends as Creighton went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 72-72 (7:04).Â
Down 76-74 moments later, Creighton rattled off another six straight on a pair of layups from junior Emma Ronsiek (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Saunders to reclaim the lead with 5:03 remaining. DePaul responded with six straight of its own, gaining an 82-80 edge (3:27), however that was the last time the Blue Demons scored.
Junior Lauren Jensen (Lakeville, Minn.) took over down the stretch, drawing consecutive fouls to knock down four free throws and draining a critical trey with 1:46 remaining to push Creighton's advantage to 87-82. Jensen immediately got the ball back by drawing a charge. Down the stretch the Bluejays grabbed a pair of critical offensive rebounds to seal the win.
Early in the game Creighton controlled the opening frame, racing out to a 19-6 lead in the opening five minutes. Junior Morgan Maly (Crete, Neb.) led the Bluejays with nine points in the first period. DePaul, however, used an 11-0 run to draw within two at 19-17 (2:43).
Taking a 23-19 edge into the second, the Bluejays methodically extended their edge to as much as 15 points at 49-34 (1:31) and led 49-41 at the half. Ronsiek controlled the second quarter with nine points, while Maly added another eight.
DePaul controlled the third quarter, shooting 11-of-15 from the field (73.3%). The Blue Demons went on to score 31 points in the frame, setting the stage for Creighton's dramatic comeback.
Five Bluejays finished in double figures, led by 22 from Ronsiek, 21 from Jensen and 20 from Maly. Junior Molly Mogensen (Farmington, Minn.) and Saunders closed the contest with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Morrow led the Blue Demons with an impressive 33 points and 10 rebounds, while Darionne Rogers and Kendall Holmes each delivered 15 points.
