Omaha, Neb. -- Led by 31 combined points from sophomores Lauren Jensen and Emma Ronsiek, the Creighton women's basketball team defeated Xavier 68-47 on Friday, February 11.
The win lifted Creighton to 17-7 on the season and 12-4 in BIG EAST play, while Xavier fell to 7-16 overall and 2-12 in conference action.
The offenses for both teams struggled through the opening two quarter as Creighton held a 14-8 edge after ten minutes and 25-21 at the break. Creighton's offense was clearly bothered by Xavier's zone defense, committing 12 turnovers in the first 20 minutes and shooting just 2-for-8 from long range. Xavier, meanwhile, struggled to find a rhythm without each of their top two scorers Nia Clark and Kae Satterfield. The Musketeers went just 9-of-28(32.1%) from the field in the first half.
Returning from the locker room Creighton and Xavier exchanged early buckets. Holding a tenuous 30-27 edge with 6:54 left, the Bluejays connected from long range on three consecutive possessions to claim a 39-29 lead. Sophomore Morgan Maly hit her first shot of the second half to get Creighton going, then seniors Rachael Saunders and Tatum Rembao found their range. The Bluejays continued to fire away in the frame, scoring 18 of their 20 points from beyond the arc in the third to take a 45-36 edge to the fourth.
Creighton put the game away early in the final period with a 9-0 run, getting points from four differing players to extend the lead to 54-36 (6:27). The Bluejays went on to lead by as much as 21 points late in the game and reach that margin once more in the closing moments.
Jensen led Creighton with 18 points, but delivered 15 points in the second half. All of Jensen's 18 points came from beyond the arc, connecting six times from long range. Two other Bluejays closed the game in double figures as Ronsiek had 13 and Maly scored all 11 of her points in the second half.
Xavier had a pair of players post a team-high 10 points, getting 20 combined points from Shaila Beeler and Aanaya Harris
