Softball Run-Rules Abilene Christian, 9-1, to Close Out UTEP Invitational

Cayla Nielsen totals two home runs and a career-high five RBI in the win
El Paso, Texas – The Creighton softball team run-ruled Abilene Christian, 9-1, on Sunday morning at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex to close out the UTEP Invitational.
The Bluejays ended the opening weekend with a 3-2 record, while the Wildcats moved to 1-4 on the year.
Freshman pitcher Alexis Wiggins tallied her first career win as a Bluejay, tossing all five innings while striking out five and allowing just three total hits.
Creighton and Abilene Christian held each other scoreless during the first inning of play before the Bluejays scored one run in the second, three in the third and five more in the fifth.
Junior Kailey Wilson got the Bluejays started in the bottom half of the second with a solo home run to straight away center to give the Jays the early 1-0 lead.
Creighton extended their lead in the third as Cayla Nielsen blasted a three-run home run over the left centerfield wall. Saren Croker led off the inning with a single to right field for the Jays. Sophomore Madeline Vejvoda advanced Josey Marquette, who was pinch running for Croker, to second with a single of her own. Following a pass ball that advance Marquette and Vejvoda to second and third, Brittney Manthie reached on a fielder's choice as Marquette was thrown out at home trying to score. Nielsen then pushed the Bluejays lead to 4-0 with a three-run shot, for her first home run of the season.
Abilene Christian added a run of their own in the top of the fourth innings. The Wildcats worked the bases loaded before scoring on a pass ball to make the score 4-1.
The Bluejays finished the contest with five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to top the Wildcats 9-1 in run-rule fashion.
Manthie led off the inning with a four-pitch walk before Nielsen slapped her second home run of the game over the right centerfield wall to push the Bluejays advantage out to 6-1. Following a pair of groundouts, Wilson recorded her second hit of the afternoon with a single to right field. Sydra Seville came on to run for Wilson and advanced to second on a wild pitch before advancing to third on a single by Alyssa Gappa. With runners on the corners and facing a 1-2 counts sophomore Emma Rosonke belted her first home run of the season with a three-run blast over the right centerfield wall to give Creighton a 9-1 lead and end the game.
Seven Bluejays recorded at least one hit in the win, with Nielsen and Wilson leading the way with two hits apiece. Nielsen recorded a career-high five RBI in the contest with a pair of home runs while Rosonke tied her career-high with three RBI and a home run.
Creighton returns to action next week at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Lamar in Beaumont, Texas. The Bluejays will play five games in three days, beginning with a Friday morning contest against Ohio.
