Baseball Opens Season with 12-2 Loss at Portland

Portland, Ore. -- The Creighton Baseball team opened the season with a 12-2 loss at Portland on Friday, February 18.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 0-1 in 2022, while Portland climbed to 1-0.
The Pilots jumped out to an early 3-0 lead by the third inning, getting a pair of runs in the second and a single tally in the third. Portland took advantage of an error and a hit batter in the second, then got an RBI single from Ben Patacsil to take a 1-0 lead. The second run of the frame crossed on a bases loaded walk to Jake Holecraft. Portland's third run came via a solo home run by Sam Brown to right field.
The Bluejays rallied in the fourth as sophomore Alan Roden slapped a single through the right side, then junior Jared Wegner blasted a two-run homer to left field.
Portland responded with a run in the fourth as Patacsil connected for a solo blast and two more runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 advantage. The Pilots tacked on one more in the seventh and five in the eighth.
Bluejay starter Dylan Tebrake took the loss (0-1), allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and three walks in 3.1 innings.
Portland starter Eli Morse (1-0) limited Creighton to three hits and two walks in six innings for the win.
Creighton and Portland will play two seven-inning games beginning at 1:00 pm (CT).
