Softball Falls in Cardinal Classic Finale to Lamar, 7-5

Beaumont, Texas – The Creighton softball team dropped a 7-5 decision to Lamar Sunday morning in the final game of the Cardinal Classic on a two-run home run by Lamar in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Bluejays fell to 7-3 on the year, while Lamar improves to 2-8 overall.
Creighton trailed 5-2 after four innings before scoring two in the fifth and one in the sixth to even things up at 5-all. Lamar blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall to claim the 7-5 victory.
Kailey Wilson went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Brittney Manthie, Cayla Nielsen and Alyssa Gappa all collected a pair of hits.
The Bluejays opened the scoring on Sunday with a sacrifice fly as both Brittney Manthie and Cayla Nielsen collected back-to-back singles to open the game. Following a walk by Kailey Wilson and a fielder's choice that loaded the bases with one out. Kiara Mill then pushed the first run of the game across with a sac fly to deep right field. Alyssa Gappa then drove in Wilson with a RBI single to left field to give the Jays a 2-0 lead after the top of the first.
Lamar evened thing up in the bottom half of the first with a two-run single up the middle by Audry Fleming.
Creighton went empty in the top of the second before the Cardinals were able to tack on another run on a trio of hits, including a triple by Aleka Xayaseng in the bottom half of the second.
Lamar extended their lead in the third after loading the bases with a walk, an infield single and a hit by pitch. Hannah Kinkade then drew a bases loaded walk to push the Cardinals lead out to 4-2.
The Cardinals pushed their lead out to three on an RBI single to left field by Kaylee Ancelot after Nicolette Ramirez reached and advanced to third on an error.
The Jays responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to one at 5-4. Wilson singled to left field to get the Jays rolling. Junior Sam Alm followed by reaching on a fielder's choice before advancing as Mills reached on a Cardinal error. Gappa then laced a single to centerfield allowing both Alm and Mills to score.
Creighton returns to Texas next week for five games at the North Texas Invitational in Denton, Texas starting on Friday against South Dakota State at 12:30 p.m.
