Bluejays finish 2-0 in Florida and improved to 7-3 overall
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Creighton women's tennis team closed out its spring break trip to Florida with a 7-0 sweep of NC Wesleyan on Thursday morning at the USTA National Campus. The Bluejays ended the week with a pair of wins, including a 5-1 over Providence in BIG EAST play.
Creighton pushes its win streak out to three matches and improves to 7-3 overall.
The Bluejays lost only three games during doubles action as Valerie Negin and Malvika Shukla combined for their fifth win of the season at the No. 2 doubles position with a 6-1 victory over Kristal Dule and Elisa Mariotta. Kate Krueger and Sarah Wilcox then clinched the doubles point for the Bluejays with a 6-2 win at the top spot for the early 1-0 advantage.
Creighton continued its dominate performance into singles action as the Bluejays won in straight-sets at the top five positions. Krueger earned the first singles point for the Bluejays as her opponent was forced to retire due to injury. Senior Meredith Benson then pushed her winning streak out to four matches with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 5 slot before Shukla did not drop a game to Chandler Brice, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 4 singles position to clinch the match for the Bluejays. Wilcox claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Isabella Gastelumend at the No. 3 spot, while Negin capped off the morning with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position.
"The ladies came out strong this morning and took control of the match from the start," said assistant coach Jean Lilly. "We were happy to get the match in after a couple of rain outs the past few days."
Creighton returns to action on March 25 for a home match against Oral Roberts. First serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. between the Bluejays and the Golden Eagles at the Koch Family Tennis Center.
