Bluejays collect 10 runs on 12 hits while Kate Mullally tosses one-hitter
OMAHA, Neb. – Junior Kate Mullally allowed only one hit in the circle and the Bluejay offense delivered 12 hits as the Creighton softball team downed Providence 10-0 in five innings on Friday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex.
The Bluejays improve to 12-10 on the year and 2-3 in BIG EAST play, while Providence falls to 17-8 overall and 4-3 in conference action.
Creighton's offense was firing on all cylinders on Friday, scoring two runs in the second and third innings before plating six runs on five hits in the fourth, including a grand slam home run by Emma Rosonke.
The Bluejays opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Kiara Mills delivered her second triple of the season into the right centerfield gap to lead off the inning. Mills scored on the very next pitch as Providence's Tori Grifone threw a wild pitch, which allowed Mills to score the first run of the game.
Creighton tacked on additional run as sophomore Alyssa Gappa was hit by a pitch and Josey Marquette, who pinch ran for Gappa, advanced to second on a sac bunt from Rosonke. Junior Sam Alm then delivered an RBI double off the centerfield wall to give the Bluejays a 2-0 lead.
After Mullally fired a one, two, three inning, the Jays got back to work and plated two more runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore Cayla Nielsen led off the inning with a double to center before advancing to third on a single by junior Kailey Wilson. Nielsen scored the Bluejays third run of the afternoon as Mills executed a sac bunt that turned into an RBI single. Following a pop out by Gappa, Rosonke loaded the bases with a single right back up the middle. Sam Alm then delivered her second hit of the game with another perfectly executed sac bunt that again turned into an RBI infield single to score the Jays fourth run of the game.
Mullally continued to stay hot in the circle, firing another three up, three down inning before Creighton erupted for six runs in the bottom half of the fourth.
Nielsen got things started by reaching on an error by the second baseman. Wilson then recorded her second hit of the game with a single to center, before Mills loaded the bases with a six-pitch walk. The Bluejays scored their fifth run on a RBI single through the left single of the infield to extend their lead out to 5-0. Two pitches later the lead grew to nine as Rosonke blasted a grand slam over the right field foul pole for her team-leading fifth home run of the season.
The Bluejays were not done there as Alm reached on a single and senior Shayna Dahlen drew a seven-pitch walk, before sophomore Madeline Vejvoda delivered an RBI single into left field to give Creighton a 10-0 lead.
Providence broke up Mullally's no-hitter in the top of the fifth with one out as Lauren Nunez hit a double into the left centerfield gap for the Firars only hit of the game. Mullally responded with a strikeout and a pop out to the second baseman to end the game and earned her second win of the season.
Alm went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Bluejay's offense. Wilson, Mills and Rosonke each recorded two hits while Rosonke led the way with four RBI.
Mullally tossed her second straight complete game and earned her second career win after striking out four batters and allowing just one hit, while Grifone was tagged with her fifth loss of the season.
The Bluejays and Friars will square off again tomorrow afternoon at the CU Sports Complex, whit first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
