Omaha, Neb. -- After honoring the memory of former Bluejay Chris Gradoville moments before the game, the Bluejays played a game the certainly would have made Chris proud as Creighton defeated St. Thomas 3-1 in its home opener on Friday, March 5.
The win pushed Creighton to 3-5 on the season, while St. Thomas fell to 2-7.
The Tommies took a 1-0 lead in the opening frame with two singles and a passed ball. St. Thomas catcher Max Morris lined a one-out single to left, took second on a passed ball, then scored via an RBI single through the right side by Charlie Bartholomew.
The game turned in the top of the second as St. Thomas got a leadoff triple from Ben Vojuvich, but Bluejay ace Dylan Tebrake stopped the Tommies cold. The first out of the frame came on a failed safety squeeze as catcher Brant Voth fielded the ball cleanly and rifled to first. Tebrake set down the ensuing two hitters on strikes.
The Creighton offense answered with a run in the bottom half of the second. Junior Jared Wegner opened the frame with a single to left-center. After stealing second base, he advanced to third and scored two batters later on a bloop single to right-center from shortstop Sterling Hayes.
Tebrake quickly disposed of the Tommies in the third in order to get his offense back to the dish. Sophomore Alan Roden worked a one-out, stole second and scored the lead run on an RBI single from Voth. The Bluejay catcher advanced on the throw to the plate and later scored on an RBI single through the left side by junior Jack Grace.
The was more than enough offense for Tebrake! The junior posted another quick gtame in the fourth and worked around a pair of hits in the fifth.
Junior Paul Bergstrom came on for the final out of the sixth and worked out of minor jams in both the seventh and the eighth. The final frame saw closer Tommy Steier deliever a hitless innning for his first save of the season.
Tebrake picked up his first win (1-1) of the season, limiting St. Thomas to one run on seven hits in 5.2 innings, notching seven strikeouts.
The Bluejays and Tommies will continue their three-game series on Saturday, March 5 at 4:30 pm.
