Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball battled frigid temperatures for over four hours as the Bluejays outlasted St. Thomas 3-2 in 15 innings on Sunday, March 6.
The win lifted Creighton to 4-5 on the season, while St. Thomas fell to 2-7 overall.
The series finale between the Tommies and Bluejays was played just above freezing, which appeared to have a impact on the bats. Entering the eight inning each team had just two base hits.
Creighton took advantage of its first hit in the second inning. Junior Jared Wegner was hit by a pitch to open the frame and stole second. Two outs later junior Jack Grace connected on an RBI triple to right to give the Bluejays a 1-0 edge.
The lead grew to 2-0 in the sixth as sophomore Alan Roden walked, stole second and scampered home on an RBI single up the middle from Wegner.
St. Thomas pushed across its first run in the eighth, getting to junior reliever Paul Bergstrom in his second inning of action. The Tommies strung together three straight hits, getting a single from Kyle Halverson, a double by Charlie Bartholomew and an RBI single by Brigs Richartz.
Creighton closer Tommy Steier recorded the final two outs of the frame to keep the Bluejays ahead 2-1.
In the ninth, however, St. Thomas used a two-out double from Sam Kulesa and an RBI single by Max Morris to knot the game at 2-2.
Steier stayed in the game for 6.2 innings, working around a one-out triple in the tenth and a bases loaded one-out jam in the 13th to extend the game.
Finally in the 15th inning the Bluejays called upon Marc Lidd for a scoreless frame.
With the top of the order coming to the dish, Creighton won loaded the bases with no outs as junior Andrew Meggs beat out an infield single, freshman Nolan Sailors lifted a double to right-center and Roden was intentionally walked.
With one down the game ended as Wegner was hit for the second time in the contest, forcing home Meggs.
Lidd earned the win (1-0) with a scoreless frame in the 15th, while starter Dominic Cancellieri settled for a no decision with 5.1 frames of scoreless ball.
St. Thomas reliever Graham Laubscher took the loss (0-2) despite striking out 12 Bluejays in 6.1 innings of work.
Wegner led Creighton's offense with two hits a run scored and an RBI.
Creighton returns to the diamond quickly as the Bluejays face Omaha on Tuesday in Tal Anderson Field (UNO's home field) at 4:00 pm.
