Uncasville, Conn. -- The Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 66-65 loss to Seton Hall as the Pirates hit a shot with 1.9 seconds left to capture the BIG EAST Quarterfinal contest with the Bluejays.
The loss moved Creighton to 20-9 on the season, while Seton Hall climbed to 19-11. The Pirates advance to the BIG EAST Semifinals against Villanova on Sunday, March 6.
Seton Hall played some of its best basketball of the season in the first half, including shooting 75% in the second period. The Pirates success on the offensive end provided energy on the defensive side as Creighton was limited to 39% in the opening half.
In spite of the Pirates efforts, Creighton remained within striking distance, down just 33-27 at halftime.
The Bluejays seized control in the third quarter with an 11-0 run. Down 37-30 (8:55) the Jays got rolling with a pair of free throws from senior Payton Brotzki, then junior Carly Bachelor delivered nine consecutive points to give Creighton a 41-37 edge (5:33).
Seton Hall reclaimed the lead late in the third, but a trey from sophomore Lauren Jensen put Creighton up 48-46 as the game moved to the final stanza.
Early in the fourth period (6:37) Seton Hall's Andra Espinoza-Hunter was called for an intentional foul for throwing an elbow. A similar foul was committed by Espinoza-Hunter in the game in South Orange on Feb. 20 (a Creighton 97-91 win in double overtime). Creighton connected on both free throws to extend its lead to 55-49, yet Espinoza-Hunter stayed in the game. She went on to score 10 points in the fourth, keeping Seton Hall in striking distance.
The Bluejays remained ahead, holding a 62-59 lead with 1:42 remaining, but five straight Pirate points gave Seton Hall a 64-62 advantage. Creighton senior Tatum Rembao hit what appeared to be the game winning shot with 26.9 seconds remaining, connecting on a trey from the corner.
Seton Hall, however, got a 12-footer from Mya Bembry with 1.9 left to collect the win. It marked the third time during the 2021-22 season that the Bluejays saw an opponent hit a game-winner with 1.9 left.
Sophomore Emma Ronsiek led the Bluejays with 13 points, while Jensen and Rembao delivered 12 points.
Sidney Cooks led Seton Hall with 20 points, while Bemby posted 12 points.
Creighton is expected to earn a bid into the NCAA Tournament. The wait for the NCAA selection show on Sunday, March 13 will less arduous than in past years as Creighton seems a lock for a bid.
