Scouting the Bluejays (2022: 4-5, 0-0 BIG EAST)
After opening the season 0-4, Creighton has won four of the last five. The Bluejays earned a shortened two-game sweep of St. Thomas with 3-1 on Friday and a hard fought 3-2 win on Sunday in 15 innings.
Unlike the series win at LMU, Creighton was stellar on the mound. The Bluejays allowed just three runs in 24 innings to lower the team ERA to 4.62. It was 6.17 entering the matchup with St. Thomas.
At the dish the Bluejays are hitting .237, led by newcomer Nolan Sailors (.357) and Brant Voth (.296) as well as veterans Alan Roden (.310) and Jack Grace (.310).
Scouting the Mavericks (2022: 3-9, 0-0 Summit)
Off to a difficult start, Omaha enters the game on Tuesday with six losses in its last seven games. The Mavericks' record however, may be a bit misleading. Omaha has a victory earlier this season over perennial power UCLA and has battled USC as well as Arkansas this season.
Omaha is hitting .263 as a team, led by Mike Boeve (.413) and Grant Goldston (.340).
On the mound the Mavericks enter the game against Creighton with a 5.81 ERA. In 100.2 innings this season, the Mavericks
have 81 strikeouts.
Reliever Tommy Steier Earns Spot on BIG EAST Honor Roll for Second Consecutive Week
The Bluejays closer appeared in both victories this weekend, earning the save with a hitless ninth on Friday to preserve the 3-1 win. Then on Sunday he allowed one run in 6.2 innings of relief, recording four strikeouts. Called upon in the eighth inning of a 2-1 game with runners at the corners, Steier notched a strikeout and a fly out. Despite allowing a run in the ninth, he worked around a one-out triple in the tenth and a one-out bases loaded jam in the 13th. For the weekend Steier posted a 1.17 ERA in 7.2 innings of relief.
Faced With Adversity, Bluejays Shine
In the series finale with St. Thomas on Sunday, March 6, Creighton faced a variety of challenges before ultimately coming out on top.
From the beginning the Bluejays were tasked with playing a game in temperatures near or at freezing, including a real feel in the lower 20s.
After taking a 2-1 lead into the ninth, St. Thomas rallied with three two-out hits to knot the game.
The Tommies put the lead run on third via a one-out triple in the tenth and loaded the bags with one-out. Each time Creighton closer Tommy Steier escaped a jam.
The Bluejay offense worked around 23 strikeouts and managed just two hits in the opening eight innings.
Despite all those factors the Bluejays loaded the bags in the bottom of the 15th with an infield single, a double and an intentional walk. Finally junior Jared Wegner plated the game-winning run as he was hit by a pitch.
