Women’s Tennis Comeback Falls Short In 4-2 Setback To Kansas City
4/13/2022 4:11:00 PM | Women's Tennis
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton women's tennis team fell to Kansas City, 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
The loss drops the Bluejays to 10-7 on the year, while Kansas City improves to 4-13 with the win.
Malvika Shukla and Sarah Wilcox combined for a 6-3 win at the No. 2 doubles position, while Kansas City claimed wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots to earn the doubles point.
Wilcox opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-3 straight-sets win at the No. 3 singles position to even the match up at 1-1.
Kansas City pushed their advantage out to 3-1 with straight-set victories at the No. 2 and No. 6 singles slots.
Senior Kate Krueger kept the Bluejays alive with a 6-1, 6-4 straight-sets triumph at the top singles spot to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Freshman Allison Wilcox and Malvika Shukla battled to three-set as the dual came down to the final two singles matches. Wilcox got off to a great start, claiming a 6-2 win in the opening set. Kansas City's Anastassiya Timofeyeva battled back to take the second set, 6-3 before clinching the match with a 6-4 win in the decisive third frame. Shukla led 5-1 in the third set at the No. 4 singles position before the Roos claimed the victory.
"This was a tough match, and we knew Kansas City was much better than their record showed as they have lost close matches to good teams," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We had our chances in the doubles playing with three different teams. We just haven't found a way to win at the top spot consistently but whichever team we put at No. 2 has won nearly every match. Credit goes out to Kansas City for a strong win today."
The Bluejays wrap up the regular season on Friday when they host Doane at the Koch Family Tennis Center. First serve between the Bluejays and Tigers is scheduled for 4 p.m.
