Sophomore Southpaw limited Red Storm to Two Runs in 7.1 IP
Queens, N.Y. -- Creighton sophomore Cade Lommel was brilliant, taking the ball into the eighth inning in Creighton's 4-2 win over St. John's on Saturday, April 16 helping the Bluejays sweep a Saturday doubleheader and the series from the Red Storm.
The Bluejays moved to 21-8 on the season and 6-0 in BIG EAST action following Saturday's victories, while St. John's fell to 12-24 overall and 0-6 in conference competition.
Just as St. John's did in the opening game of the doubleheader, the Red Storm plated a pair of unearned runs in the third taking advantage of an error, a single and a two-out two-run double from Kevin Michaels.
The fourth inning saw sophomore Alan Roden assert himself with a one-out double to left field. One out later Roden raced around from second to score on a wild pitch.
Watching his offense get going seemed to provide additional energy to Creighton starter Cade Lommel. The sophomore southpaw sat St. John's down in order during the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as he retired 10 straight.
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the sixth, Roden flexed once more with a solo homer to center to knot the game at 2-2. One pitch later Creighton took the lead as junior Jared Wegner blasted his ninth home run of the season over the left field wall. With two outs in the inning, the Bluejays got another run as junior Jack Grace laced a double to left, then sophomore Kyle Hess blooped an RBI double to right to make it 4-2.
Lommel continued to work into the eighth inning, before giving way to junior Marc Lidd for the final five outs of the game. Lommel earned his first win of the season (1-3), allowing two unearned runs and striking out a career-high nine in 7.1 innings. Lommel allowed six hits and one walk in the performance. Lidd earned his first save as a Bluejay, giving up one hit and one walk in 1.2 frames.
Roden and Grace each finished with a pair of hits to lead the offense.
Creighton will return to Omaha on Sunday, then begin a two-game series with Arizona on Monday, April 18 at 6:00 pm in Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
