Lemke Leads As Women's Golf in Second After First Round of BIG EAST Championships
4/21/2022 2:14:00 PM | Women's Golf
Freshman Katherine Lemke shot a first round 69
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Freshmen Katherine Lemke and Eleanor Hudepohl helped the Creighton women's golf team to second place after the first round of the BIG EAST Championship, presented by JEEP. Lemke shot a 3-under 69 and is tied for the lead, while Hudepohl fired a 76 and is tied for 11th place.
Lemke had four birdies (4, 5, 9 and 16) and owned the outright lead for parts of her BIG EAST Championship debut. Her 69 matched her season-low (also Sept. 21) and made her the lone Bluejay in the past 20 years with multiple rounds below 70. The Geneva, Ill., product is seeking her second title of the season, having previously won the Creighton Classic in October.
Lemke is currently tied with Xavier teammates Emma McMyler and Abby Kiefer atop the leaderboard. Xavier owns an 11-shot lead over Creighton following a 1-over total of 289 on Thursday. The Musketeers are in search of a third consecutive BIG EAST Championship title on the Callaway Gardens Mountain View course in Pine Mountain, Ga., which has a par 72 layout that measures 6,182 yards.
Hudepohl owned a pair of birdies en route to her 76 that has her in a tie for 11th place. She is seeking her fourth top-five finish of the season.
Sophomore Katie Berrian birdied No. 16 and No. 17 to lower her score to a 5-over 77 on Thursday, which places the Castle Rock, Colo., product in a tie for 14th place. She tied for 15th place at last year's BIG EAST Championship.
Gabby Tremblay is tied for 19th place following a 78. It was the sophomore's fifth straight round of 79 or lower. Tremblay is looking to replicate her runner-up finish at the 2021 BIG EAST Championship.
Rounding out the Bluejay contingent is junior Katie Allen, who is in 29th place after a 79. Allen placed 10th during the 2019 BIG EAST Championship and shares the team-lead this season with three rounds of par or better.
Creighton is attempting to improve its finish at the BIG EAST Championship for the third straight time after placing sixth in 2018, fifth in 2019 and a best-ever third last spring. CU's opening-round 300 marks its second-best round ever at a BIG EAST Championship, trailing only an opening-round 295 last April.
Round two of the BIG EAST Championship begins at 7 a.m. Central, but CU's first golfer to tee off (Allen) won't hit the links until 7:50 a.m. Lemke will tee off in a final group at 8:30 a.m.
