Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton men's and women's soccer program hosted approximately 75 students ranging from third grade to seventh in the Rasmussen Center in the annual Kicks for a Cure Soccer Clinic on Thursday, April 21.
Co-sponsored by Football for the World Foundation, the event brings youth from after school programs onto campus for a free opportunities to be exposed to the game of soccer. Specifically students from Girls Inc, Completely Kids and North Star were brought onto campus.
The clinic itself is the first of a weekend of Kicks for a Cure events. Thursday brings kids to the Rasmussen Center for the clinic, while an auction and fundraising dinner will be held on Friday, April 22 at the Marriott Downtown Omaha. Finally on Saturday four games are held at Morrison Stadium. The first two games are high school contests at 11:00 am and 1:30 pm. The Bluejays battle Omaha in a women's game at 4:00 pm, then the Mavericks and Creighton men's squads hit the pitch at 6:30 pm.
"This is one way our programs try to give back to the community, taking part today but in all the events this weekend," said Creighton men's head coach Johnny Torres. "Kicks for a Cure is a great opportunity to help raise funds to fight cancer and my team as well as myself are humbled to play a role in the fight against cancer."
In addition to the coaching staffs of both programs 10 student-athlete from each program helped as the participants were split into four sections to spend 30 minutes in skill instruction followed by 30 minutes of scrimmaging.
"Our community does so much for our program and Creighton as a University, beyond simply supporting our athletes at games," added Creighton women's head coach Ross Paule. "We're in a position give some joy to young kids on a Thursday afternoon, showing them the game we love."Â
