Freshman Katherine Lemke owns a one-shot lead with 18 holes to play
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- Creighton freshman Katherine Lemke owns the 36-hole lead at the BIG EAST Championship, with the Bluejay team in third place with 18 holes to play. Lemke moved into the outright lead with a 1-under 71 on Friday and owns a one-shot advantage over Georgetown's Megan Gormley and a two-shot edge over Xavier teammates Abby Kiefer and Emma McMyler.
Lemke had four birdies for the second straight day after beating par on No. 1, No. 6, No. 14 and No. 16., which helped her overcome a bogey on No. 12 and double-bogey on No. 15. The Geneva, Ill., native won the Creighton Classic in the fall and last week was runner-up at Stampede at the Creek in Elkhorn, Neb. No freshman has won the BIG EAST Championship since Georgetown's Jacquelyn Eleey in 2015.
Lemke's 71 was notable for two other reasons. She became the only Bluejay woman in the last 19 seasons with multiple rounds of 71 or better in the same tournament, while her four rounds of par are also the most of any Bluejay in one season in that span.
Sophomore Katie Berrian posted CU's second-best round of the day with a 74, which has her in a tie for 11th place with a 151 total. She made the turn at 1-under on the round. Her 74 was one shot off matching the best round of her season.
Freshman Eleanor Hudepohl followed up her opening-round 76 with an 80 to move into a tie for 19th place overall. She is seeking her sixth top-25 finish of the season this weekend.
CU's biggest improvement on Friday came from junior Katie Allen, who followed Thursday's 83 to a 76 on Friday. She had three birdies in her second round and her 24th-place ranking has her a few shots away from a second career top-10 finish at the BIG EAST Championship.
Rounding out CU's line-up was Gabby Tremblay, who stands in 28th place after loops of 78 and 84 for a 162 aggregate. Tremblay will be looking to replicate the final round 73 she closed last year's BIG EAST Championship with.
Xavier followed Thursday's 289 with a 293 and has a nine-shot lead over Georgetown. The Hoyas shot a 1-over 289 on Friday as Gormley fired a tournament-best 69 in the second round. Creighton's 601 has the Bluejays 10 shots behind the Hoyas and seven shots ahead of fourth place Seton Hall. The event is being played at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga., on a course measuring 6,182 yards and playing to a par 72 layout.
The final round of the BIG EAST Championship will start on Saturday at 7 a.m. Central. Tremblay will be CU's first golfer to hit the links on Saturday and is scheduled for a 7:50 a.m. tee time.
