Charlie Zielinski shoots team-best 69
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- An even-par 288 has the Creighton men's golf team tied for fourth place after day one of the BIG EAST Championship Presented by JEEP, in Pine Mountain, Ga.
A pair of Bluejays who earned All-BIG EAST accolades earlier in the day led Creighton on the opening day of the tournament, with Charlie Zielinski in fifth place and Nate Vontz tied for ninth.
Zielinski started his day on the 10th hole and birdied No. 11, 16, 17 and 18 to make the turn at a 4-under 32. He then shot 37 strokes on his final nine holes to open with a 69. It was the sophomore from Omaha's fifth round of the season in the 60s, which includes three of his past seven loops. He now owns eight straight rounds of 74 or better and has shot 79 or better in all 46 rounds of his Bluejay career.
Vontz ranks ninth after a first round 71, highlighted by an eagle on the par 4 eighth hole. The Lincoln native now has shot par or better in 12-of-25 loops during his senior season, and 34 times overall in his Creighton career.
A pair of CU sophomores are tied for 25th after identical 74s in Monday's initial round. Shaun Campbell's brilliant round was disrupted by double-bogeys on two of his final five holes, while Jackson Thompson birdied two of his final four holes to close with a flourish.
Rounding out the Bluejay contingent was junior Cade McCallum, who stands in 35th place after shooting a 76. That's three shots better than how he started last year's BIG EAST Championship.
Individually, Marquette freshman Max Lyons tied the BIG EAST Championship record for 18 holes with an 8-under 64 to take the top spot on the day one leaderboard. He made six consecutive birdies on holes No. 8 through No. 13 and nine birdies overall. Lyons tied the record set by Marquette's Matt Haase in the final round of the 2009 Championship. Butler's Raymond Sullivan birdied seven holes and stands in second place with an opening 67.
Marquette owns the overall lead after a 7-under team score of 281. The Butler team played its final three holes in 9-under to climb to second place with a 2-under 286. That's one shot better than UConn and two shots in front of Creighton and Seton Hall.
The teams are playing the Mountain View course at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga., which measures to a par 72 course that measures 7,081 yards. The BIG EAST Championship field features 10 teams and 50 players overall.
Play at the 54-hole BIG EAST Championship resumes on Tuesday at 7:20 a.m., Central with McCallum being the first Bluejay to tee off 10 minutes later.
