Creighton freshman earned her spot by winning the BIG EAST Championship
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton freshman Katherine Lemke will head to Ann Arbor to compete in the NCAA Regionals, it was announced on Wednesday on The Golf Channel during the NCAA Women's Golf Selection Show. Lemke is one of 36 individuals selected to the field, with six women being sent to each of six different Regional sites.
Lemke's competition will take place at University of Michigan Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Lemke earned her spot in the NCAA Regionals by virtue of winning a playoff at the BIG EAST Championship on April 23rd, becoming Creighton's first BIG EAST individual champion in any sport when she rolled in a 20-foot putt on the first playoff hole. Her 213 total at the tournament was the best 54-hole score for Creighton since at least 2003-04 and a figure that hasn't been surpassed at the league championship since 2013.
The Geneva, Ill., product has played 30 rounds this season, with four of those under par. Her 75.97 scoring average is the best by a Bluejay since at least 2003-04 and has helped her to four top-five finishes in 10 events played. Prior to earning medalist honors at the BIG EAST Championship, she had won the Creighton Classic on Oct. 12 and finished as the runner-up on April 12th at Stampede at the Creek.
Coached by Debbie Conry, Lemke is the first postseason qualifier in program history. One day after winning the BIG EAST Championship, Lemke returned to Omaha and threw out the first pitch at Creighton Baseball's game vs. Seton Hall.
In November, the NCAA had announced the move to a six-regional format effective with the spring championship. Each of the six regional sites will now feature 12 teams and six individuals, with the top four teams and top two individuals (not on an advancing team) qualifying for the championships, which will be held for the second straight year at Grayhawk Golf Club (Raptor Course) in Scottsdale, Arizona, from May 20-25.
