Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton Baseball team celebrated its senior day in style, walking off Butler for a 4-3 victory on Sunday, May 15.
The win boosted the Bluejays to 28-16 on the season and 13-5 in BIG EAST action, while Butler fell to 18-33-1 overall and 2-15-1 in conference competition.
Butler scratched the scoreboard first with a solo home run off the bat of Aaron Steinhart in the opening frame. Creighton countered with a run in the fourth as sophomore Alan Roden and junior Jared Wegner put Bluejays on the first and second. A sacrifice bunt by junior Jack Grace and an RBI ground out from junior Sterling Hayes leveled the game at 1-1.
The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the fifth, getting an RBI single from Ryan O'Halloran and an RBI double from Travis Holt.
Creighton responded quickly, getting a run back in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Kyle Hess was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on an RBI single by freshman Hogan Helligso.
Down 3-2 in the seventh the Bluejays knotted the game with a little bit of luck. With Helligso on first and two men out, Roden lifted a high fly ball into short left-center. The ball found grass between a trio of Bulldogs as Helligso scampered around the bases to knot the contest at 3-3.
Creighton bullpen kept the game locked at 3-3, moving the contest into the ninth. With one down, Roden was hit by a pitch for the second time in the contest. Wegner battled to a 3-2 count before lacing a single to left to give the Bluejays runners at the corners.
Facing a drawn in infield, junior Jack Grace bounced a single through the right side for the walk-off win.
Junior reliever Marc Lidd earned the win (3-1) with 2.2 innings of scoreless ball, while Butler's Derek Drees took the loss (3-3). Drees allowed one run on three hits in 1/3 of an inning.
Roden led the Bluejay offense going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Bluejays close out the regular season next weekend with a three-game series at Villanova (May 19-21).
