Storrs, Conn. -- Despite a career-high 13 strikeouts from Bluejay ace Dylan Tebrake, the Creighton Baseball team fell to #15 Connecticut 3-1 on Friday, May 6.
The loss moved the Bluejays to 25-13 on the season and 10-3 in BIG EAST action, while the Huskies climbed to 38-8 overall and 12-1 in conference play.
Tebrake was on from the opening pitch, striking out five of the first eight hitters. The Bluejay right-hander closed the game with two more critical strikeouts in the eighth inning, to keep the score at 3-1.
The only two innings that the Huskies touched Tebrake were the third inning and the seventh. Connecticut took advantage of a overturned call at first to seize a 1-0 edge in the third. With one down in the third the Huskies got a single to center from Bryan Padilla. Leadoff man David Smith was retired on a ground ball to second for the second out, but after review Smith was ruled safe at first. The overturned call allowed Erik Stock to lift a sacrifice fly to right.
Creighton answered in the fifth as freshman Nolan Sailors laced a double to right to open the frame, then senior Chris Esposito reached on a passed ball on strike three to put Bluejays on the corners with nobody out. Esposito quickly stole second, then a productive out by sophomore Nolan Clifford knotted the game at 1-1. Creighton, however, could not push across Esposito as a strikeout and fly closed the frame.
Connecticut took advantage of Tebrake's lone mistake of the game in the seventh as catcher Matt Donlan lifted a two-run homer over the right field wall to make it 3-1.
That was all the support needed by UConn ace Austin Peterson, moving to 8-0 with eight innings of one-run ball. Peterson limited the Bluejays to three hits and one walk.
Tebrake allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks in eight innings, recording 13 strikeouts, but took the loss (6-2).
Connecticut closer Justin Willis walked the first two batters of the ninth, but recovered to sit down the net three Bluejay batters for his 12th save of the season
