Storrs, Conn. -- The Creighton Baseball team dropped the series finale at #15 Connecticut, 6-5, on Sunday, May 8 as the Huskies plated the game-winning run in the eighth inning.
Creighton fell to 25-15 on the season and 10-5 in BIG EAST action, while Connecticut moved to 40-8 overall and 14-1 in conference play.
Connecticut jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second with four unearned runs. With two down in the frame a short fly into left center saw juniors Andrew Meggs and Jared Wegner run into one another allowing Korey Morton to reach on a triple. A throwing error on the following play allowed the first run to score, then a two-run double by T.C. Simmons and an RBI single from Erik Stock put the Huskies up 4-0.
Creighton answered with a big inning of its own in the fifth. Also beginning with one down, freshman catcher Hogan Helligso singled to left, the Meggs laced a single through the left side. With two down in the inning, a sequence of five pitches put the Bluejays in front. Sophomore Alan Roden started things with an RBI double to left-center. Two pitches later Wegner lined a two-run single through the right side. At the dish with a 1-0 count, junior Jack Grace mashed a two-run homer to left field to put the Bluejays up 5-4.
Connecticut, however, knotted the game with a single run in the sixth and seized a 6-5 edge in the eighth courtesy of a sacrifice fly by David Smith.
Husky reliever Devin Kirby earned the win (1-0) with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, while Creighton junior Tommy Steier took the loss (3-1) allowing one run on one hit in 3.1 innings.
Grace and Roden each led the offense with a pair of hits in the contest, while Wegner extended his reached base streak to 33 games.
The Bluejays return to Omaha for their final four games of the season in Charles Schwab Field Omaha, beginning with a Tuesday night game against the Omaha Mavericks at 6:30 pm.
