OMAHA, Neb. – Creighton softball head coach Krista Wood announced the signing of Mikayla Chairez (Kansas City, Mo.), who will join the program beginning in the fall.
"Mikayla is a competitor and thrives in high pressure situations," said Wood. "She is a slapper who puts pressure on the defense by being a triple threat at the plate. In the outfield, she has the ability to make great reads chasing down balls in the gaps. Mikayla is a leader both on and off the field and will fit right into the culture we are building here at Creighton."
Chairez, a recent graduate of Grain Valley High School, has accumulated a number of honors in her high school career, including first-team all-conference, all-district and all-region as a senior. Chairez guided the Eagles to a school record 29 victories while earning MSHSAA All-State Second Team honors in 2021. She recorded a school record 53 hits and scored 52 runs leading her team to a fourth straight Suburban White Conference championship.
Over the course of her career, Chairez helped Grain Valley to a 92-31 record and was named to the All-Suburban White Conference and the MSHSAA Class 5, District 5 All-Region team four times.
Chairez played club softball for the U-18 KC Select Fastpitch team and was coached by Eric Jones. Off the diamond, Chairez excelled in the classroom accumulating academic all-state honors as a senior.
"I chose Creighton because it felt like the best fit for me," said Chairez. "I had an instant connection with Coach Wood and knew that she would not only push me to be my best on the field but also in the classroom and in life. Creighton allows me to get a top-level education while playing softball at the highest level."
Chairez pushes the Bluejays incoming class to eight as she will join Payton Akers, Maddox Boston, Ensley Frame, Jordyn Meyer, Natalia Puchino, Sophia Schmeglar and Lily West on the field next season.
