Mondiri’s Four Point Performance Lifts Women’s Soccer to 4-1 Win Over North Dakota

The Bluejays set a Morrison Stadium record with 14 corner kicks
OMAHA, Neb. – Behind a pair of goals from junior Ariana Mondiri as well as goals from senior Jenny Grissom and sophomore Azumi Manriki, the Creighton women's soccer team posted a 4-1 victory over North Dakota on Thursday, Sept. 1.
The win keeps the Bluejays unbeaten as they move to 2-0-3 on the season, while the Fighting Hawks fall to 2-2-1 on the year.
It took a mere 70 seconds for the Bluejays to claim a 1-0 lead, as Grissom finished off a cross from Manriki for the early advantage. Manriki sent the cross into the middle of the box where Grissom fielded the pass off her chest before dribbling around a North Dakota defender and besting the Fighting Hawks goalkeeper for her second goal of the season.
It was the earliest goal in the Ross Paule ear and the earliest goal by a Bluejay since Franny Hylok scored in just 35 second s against Drury on Oct. 18, 2002. The Bluejays had a goal against Portland State on Sept. 12, 2008 in 70 seconds, but it was an own goal by the Vikings.
Creighton would push its lead to 2-0 in the 20th minute as Ariana Mondiri raced down a through ball into the box from junior Abigail Santana. With a defender on her side, Mondiri found the back of the net on a sliding kick for her first goal as a Bluejay.
North Dakota pulled back within one in the 33rd minute as Hannah Olson fielded a pass inside the Bluejays six-yard box from Bailey McNitt, then bested the Bluejays backline and goalkeeper Keelan Terrel to make the score 2-1.
Six minutes later the Bluejays regained a two-goal advantage as Manriki found the back of the net in the 39thminute. Following a corner kick senior Hitomi Yamaue fired a shot that was deflected by a Fighting Hawks defender. Senior Aida Kardovic, seeing her first minutes of the season, fielder the deflection and sent a pass back to Manriki for blasted her first goal of the season into the back of the net from 20-yards out.
The match remained 3-1 through halftime and well into the second half, until a goal in the 63rd minute by Mondiri put the match away. Fielding a pass from Grissom, Mondiri used her speed to work her way around North Dakota's backline before touching the back of the net for her second goal of the match.
Creighton finished the match with a 32-3 edge in shots, as the Bluejays held the Fighting Hawks to zero shots in the second half. The Bluejays also held a 14-4 advantage in corner kicks, which tied a Morrison Stadium record.
The Bluejays will return to Morrison Stadium on Sunday afternoon, when they welcome Tulsa into town. Kickoff between the Bluejays and the Golden Hurricane is scheduled for 1 p.m.
