DES MOINES, Iowa – Sophomore Allison Wilcox claimed a runner-up finish in the Flight C Singles Championship as the Creighton women's tennis team wrapped up its stay at the Drake Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 11.
After capturing a pair of wins on Saturday, Wilcox played for the Flight C singles title on Sunday morning. Wilcox's run fell just short, falling in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 to South Dakota's Paige Alter.
Junior Malvika Shukla closed out the first weekend of competition by defeating Nebraska-Karney's Narindra Ranaivo 8-3 in a Flight B Consolation Draw, while freshman Ana Paula Martinez fell 8-5 to Drake's Mille Haagenson in Flight A.
In the Flight A Doubles Consolation draw, Leanne Kendall and Valerie Negin fell 7-6 against a pair from Augustana while Shukla and Shukla fell 7-6 to a duo from Drake in the Flight B Consolation draw.
"I thought we played better at most spots today," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Doubles were better and we had our chances, but we couldn't finish things out at the end of both matches. Allison had a great run but just didn't have enough today against a very steady opponent. Malvika played a very strong match and cruised to finish the tournament. The plan was to get experience and figure out what we need to do moving forward and this tournament helped."
Creighton returns to the courts on Sept. 30 for the Omaha Duals, co-hosted by the Bluejays and Omaha at the Koch Tennis Center.
