Katherine Lemke ties for second place
EDEN, Utah -- The Creighton women's golf team won the 10-team Kelsey Chugg Invitational on Tuesday in Eden, Utah, topping a 10-team field to earn a five-shot victory. Five Bluejays finished in the top-20, led by a second-place showing from sophomore Katherine Lemke.
Creighton fired consecutive rounds of 296 on Monday before closing with a 303 to hold off runner-up Montana State by five shots. Omaha placed third in the event with a 904 score. The win was Creighton's third tournament title in the last four seasons, but first in an event with nine teams or more since winning the Eastern Illinois Lady Panther Intercollegiate in October of 1999.
Lemke, who won a pair of tournaments as a freshman, compiled rounds of 73, 75 and 72 to tie for second place with a 220 total. It's her fifth career top-five finish in 13 events at the collegiate level. Lemke was tied for the lead after she started her final nine holes, but Montana State's Scarlet Weidig-Velazquez birdied five of the final eight holes to earn the four-shot victory in the field of 68 golfers.
Freshman Mia Gaboriau earned her second top-10 finish in a row following rounds of 75, 71 and 78 for a 224 total that tied her for eighth place. Gaboriau tied for third in the field with 10 birdies during the tournament.
Three Bluejays tied for 18th place with a 229 aggregate. Freshman Annika Yturralde shot rounds of 79, 73 and 77 and Katie Allen completed circuits of 71, 81 and 77. Allen's opening round of 71 on the Par 72 Wolf Creek Resort course that measured 6,097 yards extended her school record for career rounds of par or better to seven. Competing as an individual and not factoring into the CU team score was Gabby Tremblay. Tremblay had rounds of 73, 75 and 81 in her fall season debut.
Rounding out the Bluejay lineup was sophomore Eleanor Hudepohl, who finished with three consecutive rounds of 77 to take 28th place.
Creighton returns to action on Monday for the Boston College Intercollegiate in Canton, Mass.
