Keeley Davis leads Creighton with 19 Kills
OMAHA, Neb. -- In front of the largest regular-season volleyball-only crowd in NCAA history (15,797), No. 17 Creighton pushed No. 2 Nebraska to the brink before the visiting Cornhuskers escaped with a 3-2 win at CHI Health Center Omaha on Wednesday, Sept. 7. Scores of the match in favor of Nebraska were 25-18, 25-23, 25-27, 18-25, 15-9.
The crowd shattered the previous record of 14,022 set in 2018 in another 3-2 Nebraska victory over Creighton, also at CHI Health Center Omaha. The top 13 regular-season volleyball-only crowds in NCAA history have now taken place in the state of Nebraska, with five of those crowds coming in Omaha.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 5-2 on the season, while Nebraska moved to 6-0.
Keeley Davis led Creighton with a season-high 19 kills and her 15 digs made her one of three Bluejays with a double-double. Norah Sis (15 kills, 12 digs) and Kendra Wait (45 assists, 18 digs) also owned double-doubles while freshman defensive specialist Sky McCune logged a match-best 22 digs. Creighton had 61 kills, three aces, 89 digs and seven blocks on .202 hitting.
Nebraska sophomore Whitney Lauenstein led all players with 25 kills, 10 more than her previous career-high, while Lindsay Krause had 16 kills and Madi Kubik collected 14 kills and 12 digs. The Huskers had 78 kills, 93 digs, nine blocks and no aces while hitting .244.
Nebraska broke free from a 9-9 deadlock midway through the first set with an 11-2 run. Lauenstein had seven kills in 10 swings to pace a Husker attack that owned a 20-6 edge in kills during the frame.
Creighton led much of the second set, including 16-13 and 21-19, before NU rallied. The Huskers used a Kubik kill to go ahead 23-22, their first lead since 7-6. After a Bluejay sideout, NU took a 2-0 lead in the match thanks to a Bluejay serving error and a kill from Krause. Lauenstein had eight kills for the visitors, while Davis added six kills and six digs for the Bluejays in the second set.
The Bluejays became the first team to win a set against the Huskers in the third game, surviving a match point to extend the top-20 showdown. The teams were tied at 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 before NU went up 25-24 on a kill by Bekka Allick. CU stayed alive with a kill by Kiara Reinhardt and took a 26-25 advantage on a kill by Davis. CU won the set on an attack error by Allick that sailed wide. CU hit .300 in the third set as Wait owned 14 assists, six digs and an ace while quarterbacking the Bluejay attack.
Creighton scored the first three points of the fourth set and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire en route to a 25-17 triumph. Sis, Davis and Schmitt each had four kills for CU, which also held NU to .047 hitting in 43 swings. Both McCune and libero Allison Whitten had seven digs for the Bluejays in the fourth frame.
Creighton built an early 5-3 lead in the fifth set, but Nebraska countered with a 6-1 run to take the lead for good. CU closed within one at 9-8 on a Whitten ace but after the teams traded sideouts, NU put away the Bluejays with the final five points of the match. Nebraska hit .407 with 12 kills in the final set, including four kills by Krause.
The Bluejays return to the court on Friday, Sept. 9 as Creighton faces Florida State in the Omaha Invite at Baxter Arena. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
