Norah Sis sets CU record for attacks in a match
OMAHA, Neb. -- No. 17 Creighton Volleyball showed no ill effects from Wednesday's emotional match vs. Nebraska, as a standout defensive effort helped defeat a talented Florida State team in five sets on Friday, Sept. 9 at the Omaha Invite Presented by Sarpy County Tourism.
Scores of the match in favor of Creighton in its first match ever at Baxter Arena were 25-19, 19-25, 29-27, 25-27, 15-12.
The record books will have to be rewritten after Friday's marathon. Sophomore Norah Sis had a career-high 28 kills on a school-record 93 attack attempts, obliterating the previous CU mark of 77 swings in a match by Jaali Winters. Sis also added 19 digs for her fourth double-double of the fall. Kendra Wait's 59 assists were a career-high and her 36 digs were two shy of the CU record for a single-match. Kiana Schmitt matched her career-best with 12 kills and Ava Martin established a career-high with 11 kills. Allison Whitten had a season-best 29 digs and Keeley Davis contributed a career-high 25 digs in addition to her 13 kills. As a team, CU's 129 digs were its most ever in a five-set match and two shy of the school-record for a match of any length. CU's 254 attack attempts were second-most in history. It was all part of CU's second five-set match in 48 hours after a 3-2 loss before an NCAA record crowd of 15,797 against No. 2 Nebraska two days earlier just five miles away.
Creighton (6-2) controlled the first set, a 25-19 victory, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Jays hit .341 and pounded 18 digs while also playing stout defense with 28 digs in a preview of things to come. Sis had six kills and seven digs while Davis and Schmitt both owned four putaways. Whitten had six digs while Wait owned 13 assists and eight digs in the opener. Creighton hit .341 in the first set. Florida State (7-2) was paced by four kills from Audrey Rothman but hit just .146 as a team.
Florida State evened the match with a 25-19 win of its own in the second set, hitting .364 with 14 kills. The score was knotted at 13-all before a 6-0 Seminoles run ended up being too much of a gap to overcome. Senior Jazz Schmidt saw her first action since the first weekend and provided a spark with an immediate 4-0 run, but it was too much to overcome. CU hit .143 in the second frame.
The Seminoles looked in control with a 15-8 lead in the third set before CU rallied. The Jays used a 7-0 run on Ellie Bolton's serve to take a 19-17 lead. Creighton squandered four set point opportunities before Wait and Schmitt teamed up for a block on CU's fifth chance to clinch the 29-27 victory and grasp a 2-1 lead in the match. Sis had eight kills and Wait contributed 14 kills and 10 digs in the third set triumph, part of CU's 31 digs in the third set.
The score was knotted at 22-all in the fourth set after FSU rallied from a 21-18 deficit. The Jays had match points at 24-22, 24-23 and 25-24, only to see FSU stay alive each time and steal a 27-25 set after a block by Rothman and Emma Clothier on game point. Both Whitten (12) and Wait (10) had double-figure digs in the fourth set alone as CU had 40 digs on FSU's 63 swings. Sis added nine kills in a whopping 36 swings during the fourth frame. FSU's Emery Dupes and Rothman each had 10 digs in the fourth set.
Creighton used a 6-0 run on Sis' serve to surge to a 12-6 lead in the fifth set before FSU countered with the next four points. Creighton then led 14-10 before two more points from the 'Noles prompted the final timeout of the contest. A kill from Martin, her season-high 11th, ended the 2:41 long marathon. CU had 11 kills and 15 digs in the fifth game, with Sis contributing five digs, three kills and an ace. The Jays held FSU to .125 hitting in the fifth set.
Creighton finished with 78 kills, three aces, 129 digs and eight blocks on .193 hitting.
FSU was paced by 17 kills from Audrey Koenig, and Rothman notched 13 kills and 26 digs. The Seminoles tallied 65 kills, eight aces, 123 digs and 12.5 blocks on .178 hitting.
Creighton returns to the court on Saturday at 3 p.m. when it meets tournament host Omaha, also at Baxter Arena. The contest can be heard on 1180 The Zone (KZOT) and be watched on Nebraska Public Media. The Mavericks are 4-2 after last night's 3-0 loss to Florida State to open the Omaha Invite.
