Baylor Scheierman scores a season-high 25 points
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Baylor Scheierman had a season-high 25 points but No. 12 Xavier rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Creighton, 90-87, on Wednesday evening at a sold out Cintas Center on the Xavier campus.
Xavier (14-3) won its 10th straight game while improving to 6-0 in BIG EAST play for the first time. Creighton (9-8, 3-3) fell to 2-4 against top-25 competition this winter.
The game featured plenty of offensive firepower from the jump, as the teams combined for 32 points in the first five minutes and 48 by the second media timeout. The teams were tied 11 times in the opening half before Creighton took a 46-45 lead into halftime. All five Bluejay starters scored seven points or more in the opening stanza, led by 11 from Ryan Kalkbrenner. The Jays dished 11 assists on 17 baskets and shot 54.8 percent from the field and 9-of-10 at the foul line. Xavier had six men scored five points or more, paced by 10 from reserve Jerome Hunter. The Muskies shot 48.6 percent from the field and owned a 19-15 lead on the glass. Xavier had 13 assists on 17 hoops before the break, including four dimes from Souley Boum.
CU rode the hot shooting left hand of southpaw sharpshooter Scheierman early in the second half. The senior scored 11 straight points for the Bluejays to push CU into a 61-56 lead advantage with 13 minutes remaining. CU led 70-64 on a Nembhard basket with just over nine minutes remaining but the Muskies made their next six shots as part of a 16-3 run to build an 80-73 lead with 5:12 left. CU countered with the next three points to draw within 80-76 by the final media timeout.
Nembhard scored eight points down the stretch to give the Jays a chance. His triple got CU within three with 2:53 left and a floater with 23.9 seconds to go brought the Jays within 86-84. Xavier would turn it over with 22.3 left, giving CU a golden opportunity. The Jays worked it into Scheierman, who got to the middle of the lane but turned it over before getting a shot off. Xavier's Boum was fouled with 5.9 left and the 87.1 percent shooter sank both. Alexander drained a trey for CU with 2.3 seconds left and CU fouled Boum with 2.0 left. He made two more foul shots and the CU inbounds pass would be tipped away as time expired.
Scheierman's 25 points topped the Bluejays, while Nembhard finished with 17 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Alexander ended with 16, Kalkbrenner had 15 points and eight rebounds and Arthur Kaluma narrowly missed his third straight double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds while battling foul trouble after halftime. Creighton shot 50 percent for the game, including 43.5 percent from deep, and won the battle of the paint, 38-32.
Xavier was led by 26 points from Boum and 20 more by Colby Jones. The Musketeers got 15 points and 12 rebounds by Jack Nunge and outrebounded CU 41-30. The Musketeer bench outscored CU 17-3, including a dozen points from Hunter.
