Women’s Tennis Opens ITA Regional With Pair of Qualifying Victories

Lawrence, Kan. – Sophomore Ana Paula Martinez qualified for the main singles draw while qualifying for the main doubles draw with classmate Annika Elvestrom on the first day of the ITA Regional at the Jayhawk Tennis Center in Lawrence, Kan.
"It was a very windy day playing in the elements today," said head coach Tom Lilly. "It was successful start with a singles and doubles qualifying. Ana played some great tennis and Annika responded well to get a close win in a tough match, before working together in doubles. We are looking forward to some great competition in the main draw's tomorrow."
Martinez earned a spot in the main draws tomorrow after cruising to a pair of singles victories on Thursday afternoon. The Queretaro, Mexico native rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 straight sets win over Oral Roberts Annelise Deer, before claiming a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Arkansas State's Sarah Millard to advance to the Round of 32 Main Singles Draw.
Elvestrom dropped her first match of the day to Saint Louis' Kseniia Aleshina, but rallied for a 6-1, 5-7, 11-9 tiebreaking win over Central Arkansas' Ting-An Chen in the Consolation Singles Round of 64.
In doubles action, Elvestrom and Martinez qualified for tomorrows main draw after battling to an 8-5 triumph over Oral Roberts Cassie Cervantes and Kaede Tada.
Bluejay senior Malvika Shukla and junior Valerie Negin will join Elvestrom and Martinez in the main draw, set to being on Friday morning in Lawrence.
