Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Men's Soccer and Bluejay Athletics as a whole will recognize the passing of former Bluejay Dr. Matthew Mendlick (1975-2023) with a tribute followed by a moment of silence prior to the Bluejays match with Akron on Wednesday, October 18.
Known to his teammates as Big Dog, Dr. Matthew Ryan Mendlick passed away after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer on October 15, 2023 at the age of 48.
Â
A dedicated husband, father, brother, son, physician, coach and fitness enthusiast Matt will forever be remembered for his unwavering positivity. Even in the face of a disease he lived every single day to the fullest and was a presence for his family for the past 15 years. Known for his work ethic and leadership, Matt was valedictorian of his Olathe South High School class of 1994. That work ethic was put on display on the pitch as a walk on at Creighton in 1994 and helping the Bluejays reach the College Cup in 1996. Mendlick played four seasons (1994-97) at Creighton.
Â
Celebrating Matt's memory are his loving wife, Katie Mendlick; children, Lauren Mendlick, Ryan Mendlick & Mia Mendlick; father, Mike Mendlick; sisters, Amy Klein & Marcia (Dan) Walker.
Matt's family will receive friends for visitation at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church of Omaha on Wednesday, October 18th from 5-7P, with a Rosary Service at 7P. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, October 19th at 10:30A at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with a private family burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred to the Creighton University Athletics (www.creighton.edu/mendlick) or Head for the Cure (Give.headforthecure.org/mendlick).
