CHICAGO, Ill. – Despite a first half goal by the reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, Anja Jestrovic, the Creighton women's soccer team settled for a 1-1 draw with DePaul on Thursday afternoon at Wish Field in Chicago, Ill.
The draw moves Creighton's record to 4-7-5 on the season and to 2-5-1 in BIG EAST play, while DePaul moved to 5-6-4 overall and 1-4-3 in league play.
Creighton scratched the scoreboard first with a goal in the 21st minute as Jestrovic, delivered her third goal of the season. Senior Abigail Santana delivered a service pass into the 18-yard box, where Jestrovic recovered a failed clear by the Blue Demons before lofting a shot into the back of the net to give Creighton a 1-0 lead.
Despite DePaul holding a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first half, the score would remain 1-0 in Creighton's favor through halftime.
However, in the 57th minute of play DePaul's Freya Jupp leveled the match with an unassisted goal. Tightly covered on the right side of the 18-yard box, Jupp shook off a Bluejay defender and fired a shot pass fifth-year senior Keelan Terrell into the top of the net to even the score at 1-1.
The Bluejays fought to regain the lead late in the match, getting a dangerous scoring opportunity in the final five minutes of play. Freshman Savanna Solomon had a one-on-one scoring chance with the DePaul keeper but was denied at the goal line.
DePaul closed the match with a 11-7 advantage in shots, the Bluejays earned a 5-3 edge in corner kicks created.
Creighton returns to the pitch on Sunday afternoon for a matchup against #20 Xavier in Morrison Stadium. The Bluejays will honor five seniors prior to the match.
