VILLANOVA, Pa. – Behind a pair of second half goals by senior Hannah Luke and junior Alyssa Judkins, the Creighton women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win over Villanova for their first BIG EAST win of the season on Sunday, Oct. 8 at the Higgins Soccer Complex in Villanova, Pa.
The win moved the Bluejays to 3-7-4 on the year and to 1-5-0 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova suffered its first loss at home this season, falling to 4-3-6 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play.
The Wildcats nearly took the lead in the 24th minute earning a penalty kick on a handball in the box by the Bluejays. Fifth-year senior Keelan Terrell settled in on her line and denied the PK attempt to keep Villanova off the scoreboard.
Villanova, however, would take the lead in the 38th minute with a goal by Jackie Richards. Junior Megan Donnelly was credited with the assist, intercepting a pass in the midfield and feeding a pass through the Bluejays backline, leaving Richards with a one-on-one scoring opportunity with Terrell.
Down 1-0 early in the second period, senior Hanna Luke sparked the Bluejays comeback with a goal off a set piece in the 48th minute. After drawing a foul on the right side of the box, freshman Anja Jestrovic delivered a cross at the near post where Luke tapped in her second goal of the season to level the match at 1-1.
Twenty minutes later junior Alyssa Judkins delivered her first goal of the season to give Creighton a 2-1 lead with 22:41 remaining in the match. Senior Lara Kazandjian set the play in motion firing a shot off the crossbar and out of the reach of the leaping Villanova goalkeeper Payton Woodward. With Woodward on the ground, Judkins raced into the box and headed home the game-winning goal for the Bluejays.
The Bluejays would battle defensively over the remainder of the match, limiting the Wildcats to just three shots over the final 20 minutes to secure their first BIG EAST win.
Creighton closed the match with a 21-11 advantage in shots, while Villanova held the edge on corners created 7-2. Terrell and Woodward each finished the afternoon with five saves.
