SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Playing in the ITA National Fall Championships for the first time in program history, senior Matthew Lanahan and junior Alejandro Gandini had their magical run come to an end in the round of 16 at the ITA National Fall Championship on Thursday.
The Bluejay duo was downed by TCU's Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Gandini and Lanahan opened the first set by winning the first game of the match before the Horned Frogs duo rattled off four game winners to take an early 4-1 lead. The Bluejay tandem battled back too close to within one at 4-3 but wouldn't get any closer as Chan and Maxted closed out the first set with a 6-3 victory.
The Bluejay duo quickly responded, soaring out to a 3-1 advantage in set two. The Horned Frogs, however, answered with a five straight game-winners to claim the victory with a 6-4 set win.
"Tough loss today," said head coach Gerhard Posch. "I don't think Matthew and Alejandro played as well as they wanted to, although they had some phases of outstanding tennis. TCU has a very strong team, so congratulations to them."
The event concluded fall collegiate tournament play for the Bluejays. Gandini, Lanahan and the rest of the Creighton men's tennis team will return to the courts for the dual season starting in late January.
